Israel would have a spaz attack if we took their privilege away. I can here the screaming right now. Every member of the knesset just going "REEEEE" upon hearing that America was done giving them foreign aid or weapons. Screaming upon hearing that we had left the middle east forever.

Netanyahu is definitely in a corner now. Unable to form a government, which would be his get out of jail card, he's in dire political straits now.

Presumably like most NATO countries did, and like most of the rest of our allies would: they'd freak out for a bit, and then come to terms with it, while hoping for a change in policy.

We should be so lucky.

I doubt Gantz will do anything until Mandelblit decides whether or not to indict Bibi. If Bibi's indicted, sure, he's dead meat, since I'll bet there are plenty of Likudniks who would rather be part of the government -- and maybe be ministers! -- than to worry about loyalty to Netanyahu.

The traditional coalition route for both Bibi and Gantz is blocked due to Avigdor Lieberman. All depends on what other Likuds do with Netanyahu and whether they are willing to pool resources to join under Gantz.

Bibi's not actually forming the next Israeli government? Well I must admit, if this doesn't end in 2020: Third Time's The Charm, it'll be the end of an era, especially for Israeli politics.

Emphasis mine.

While we advise against people shouting 'REEE' at people on here, we don't treat it as trolling unless it's clear that the intent is to troll. Including the phrase 'would have a spaz attack' makes this pretty cut and dry. Plus, there's your colourful ban history to consider as well.

With Netanyahu unable to form a government, maybe Israel will finally move away from being governed by the right-wing. :)

Blue and White is merely in the center, and Israeli politics usually has a skew towards the right.

Israel is more right wing than Europe, hell, it’s more Right than America. It’s political frame is comparable to that of the third world than a Western democracy, the chance of what a Western liberal would consider “left” party coming to power is nonexistent at this point in time

It's not especially surprising that a century of intermittent conflict would yield a slew of right-wing governments. Israel was pretty left-wing when it was initially founded and Labor Zionism still had some degree of clout even in the nineties even if it was effectively hamstrung after Begin to my knowledge.

Lieberman has officially refused to endorse....this means Round 3 in early March: https://www.yahoo.com/news/israel-faces-likely-third-election-064720363.html

Three general elections in a year. Arguably, Likud's never had it so good now that the settlements have been declared legal by the US, yet no government can form.

Nationalism is not really a symptom of laziness or indulgence. It's something that often occurs in populations that experience severe internal or, especally, external pressures. Israel has been under assault by an easily identifiable other for close to a century and, when we discuss the disapora, has been under assault by dozens of easily identifiable others for close to two millennium. It's not really surprising that, when coupled with the decline in popularity of socialism, this has led to intense nationalism. It's really one of the few viable defenses the country has.

Largely because Bibi is laughably corrupt and Likud hasn't addressed a lot of the internal social issues that Israelis want addressed. I imagine Likud would cobble together a coalition if they could oust and replace Bibi.
