You would let Staples take over? :eyebrow:

Of course! What better way to govern a nation than give it to an office supply corporation that's been slowly drifting into obscurity for the past decade or so?

I'd want there to be equal populations in each state.

I doubt the people living in those states would want that.

Make every state independent then, so that they don't get jealous of Alaska and Hawaii. ;)

You will pry Minnesota's nubbin from our cold, dead hands. We earned that little middle finger into Canada, and we are damn well going to keep it.

As for what I would do, I would wall off Wyoming excluding Yellowstone. Neither they, nor the rest ofnthe country, would ever notice.

Being from Florida, I'd love to split in half. Everything North of Gainsville becomes North Florida, and North Florida can have fun with praying away school shootings and their heartbeat abortion laws and environmental devastation. The rest becomes South Florida (yes, we keep Orlando), it becomes a light blue state and we can finally get civilized.

Similarly, as a NY'er, I think everything below and including Westchester County should become its own state, so that upstate can finally pass pro-business laws and cut taxes to repair some of the damage that the NYC-dominated state government has inflicted for the past several decades.

Bluelight-R006 wrote:I would redraw the US to make it a one United State altogether. If they’re United States, then why divide them? Sure theyre states, but can’t we leave the borders out?

That defeats the purpose of federalism. The founders adopted a system of federalism because they disliked the idea of one powerful central government, as they had under british rule. Federalism allows the states to check the power of the federal government, and visa versa. They viewed it as preferable to confederalism, which we had under the First Constitution (Articles of Confederation) and made the U.S. incredibly weak. To preserve the power of the states and prevent too powerful of a central government, they adopted federalism.

As for adopting a unitary, or centralized system of government (which, by the way, is essentially the system each state government operates on), that would be problematic. One (immensely dysfunctional) central government cannot govern the third largest country in the world (in both area and population) all by itself; that's part of the reason why we have states. Local governance would become a nightmare. Not to mention the fact that federalism allows for local voices to have a say in their region. It quells unrest, and increases democracy.

Why do you think some of the largest countries in the world (Russia, U.S., Canada, Brazil, Mexico, India, and prior to its dissolution, the USSR) are federations? Because they understand those benefits of federalism, and that a unitary system doesn't work well in a large, democratic society. To that end, the only large country in the world that isn't a federation is China, a vastly undemocratic country in which the central government exercises near-complete control over the country, and even then, China needs devolved government (a form of unitary government similar to a federation, but where local/provincial governments have far less authority or power, and aren't guaranteed by the constitution; the central government can abolish or reorganize them as they see fit. Think the relationship between State governments and cities & counties.) to maintain control in some areas. So in other words, the largest countries in the world are federations, unless they're authoritarian dictatorial regimes, in which case they might not be. But if you're a large democratic country, odds are you're gonna be a federation.

How would you redraw the United States to make each state more representative of the overall culture of the people living there? Would you split some states apart? Put some together? What lines would you redraw?

I would split Texas in East and West, and I would then combine East Texas with Louisiana, make a "Gulf Coast State". I would maybe Gulf Coast of Alabama and Northern Florida.

I would also combine northern Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee.

And would combine Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia and DC.

And would combine Oregon and Idaho and Washington.

And so forth... How would you redrawn states?

Add NYC and Long Island to Connecticut (that, or grant statehood to Long Island and Lower New York), and make Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virigin Islands all states.
