How would you redraw the US states?

How would you redraw the United States to make each state more representative of the overall culture of the people living there? Would you split some states apart? Put some together? What lines would you redraw?

I would split Texas in East and West, and I would then combine East Texas with Louisiana, make a "Gulf Coast State". I would maybe Gulf Coast of Alabama and Northern Florida.

I would also combine northern Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee.

And would combine Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia and DC.

And would combine Oregon and Idaho and Washington.

And so forth... How would you redrawn states?

Imagine a unitary American government, it would be unrecognizable to what we have today.

It would be worse, since it would be more difficult to manage. The federalist system also promotes competition between states and allows for experimentation in states where one party is dominant.

They're mostly fine the way they are, though I would move around some places where a big city in an extreme end of the state drives the whole state and leaves the rest of it out in the cold. The state of New York should be confined to New York City and its bedroom counties, the Adirondacks and Catskills should go to Vermont, while the Finger Lakes and Buffalo-Niagara region should go to Pennsylvania. the eastern three thirds of Washington and Oregon should go to Idaho. Illinois should be divided up in a kind of similar way as New York, with the Chicago metro becoming Illinois and then divide the rest (not as sure how as New York, I actually lived in Chicago for a while but with the exception of a day trip to Galena, rarely ventured into other parts of the state).

It would be an administrative nightmare. Delegating authority over certain issues to local authorities simplifies things for the federal government. And the reason they are the United States and not a United State is that they're a collection of semi-autonomous states that can set their own policy according to the needs and wishes of their people, but united in the fact that their defense and trade policy is decided by the federal government. The people of New York have no say in the tax policy of Texas and the people of Arkansas have no say in the abortion policy of California.
