I would combine the Carolinas, Virginias , and Dakotas make things less complex. Texas would include Oklahoma, Georgia would anex Alabama and Mississippi, Florida will loose most of it's panhandle that way Alabama or technically Georgia will have a straight boarder. Also any other strange boarder like city's and towns cut off by a river but connected by a bridge, that part of Virginia connected to Maryland type of things. And new Mexico will be between Texas and California.

I would base it all off of population densities (mostly, also taking into account vast physical and cultural separations) so as to place borders along the least-densely populated areas, thus leaving most metropolitan centers unified.

Why so many want to combine the Virginias? They're pretty culturally different.

People don't seem to get that the bulk of the divisions in US states were culturally enforced. The animosity between Virginians from either side of the Appalachians has been there since "Westsylvania" was proposed way back in the early days of the Union. I'd also argue that the Carolinas are very different.

Jury's still out on the Dakotas, though. Do enough people even live there for them to have a "culture"?

Nah, Canadians are too nice. They won't mind if we make them 54th instead so we can annex the UK faster (and tax the crap out of their tea as well).

I live in North Carolina. The difference between east, center and west of the state is more than the difference between north and south carolina (excluding the dialect).
It is much easier to see who is from the west than who is from north/south.

If you are dividing by culture, make Appalachia two or three states (divided based on how much southern culture), and separate parts of the coast.

Also, if not using culture or population densities:

In a thread about a totally unrealistic scenario, I don't really see the value in calling out conservatives on congressional supermajority wet dreams.

The last state border change was in 2017...

What's unrealistic about this thread is how people have attempted to run with it rather than the actual idea. Although, to be fair, the scope of the exercise... and the implicit timeline... suggested by the OP does rather suggest an unrealistic exercise.

I suppose you could twist the OP to argue that it's really about using the current political borders to guide a construction of a cultural border map, and while taking that to mean "political culture" isn't quite the point of the exercise it does get very close to it.

Mushet wrote:Why so many want to combine the Virginias? They're pretty culturally different.

I agree... in the simple sense (I did not notice there were two Virginias and/or hadn't bothered remembering this*) that I looked at this thread and it seemed to me that everyone was making a whole bunch of assumptions about state cultures that may or may not be true, hence I suggested co-opting your Census to help answer the question for real. Plus make the usual point about bringing universal suffrage to the US but mostly it was the data answer.
