I really don’t get how there’s any debate on this.

In the video you clearly hear the kids making Native American war cries and other stereotypical sounds that whites ascribe to “Indians”. And the whole time the white kid is an inch from the drummer’s face with a smirk, as his colleagues are mocking the drummer and waving their arms around. You could feel the apprehension of if the standoff was going to get violent or not. It was a tense situation where a native elder was a target of racist banter by a bunch of overly-hyped high school kids who felt empowered by their MAGA hats to be obnoxious.

Where is the part where I’m supposed to side with these kids again?

That's because important media outlets and public figures have a disproportionate effect on popular opinion and thus must be held to a disproportionately high standard of check the facts before you open your trap as well. As it stands they now look like idiots that mouthed off without thinking and are trying to cover it up rather than apologizing to everyone for exposing us to their stupidity in a way that might permanently effect our views of the situation in a negative way.

So I watched the whole video. The kids were there I think chanting build the wall, I am not certain they may have just been there silently in their hats.

I also see it was the drummer who approached the children and drummed in one child's face. Honestly the teenager acted better than teenage me would have acted. I likely would have pushed him away for getting in my face like that. Now the rest of the kids were joking clapping, dancing, and doing the tomahawk chop. I am not sure that was intended to mock or just teenagers goofing off. I am inclined the believe it was more the latter having been a teenager myself, even if it was a the former that is the norm for a protest and counter protest (do pro choice people not mock pro lifers and vice a versa).

Now I have heard that the group of native Americans wanted to go up to the Lincoln memorial and the teenagers were in their way and that's why the drummer elected to escalate the conflict. There are several issues this arguments raises. 1st why didn't the group of Native Americans ask to be let through like the adults they are ? Drumming in my face is not in most languages interpreted as a request to step aside. 2nd why did they opt to go through the kids with the MAGA hats ? The Lincoln memorial has a a 100 foot wide stair case and you want to go through the ten foot space half a group of teen are standing around, that seems to me they were looking to generate a conflict. 3rd I am fairly certain the Lincoln memorial is closed for roof repairs anyway so it seems more likely they wanted the space the children had more than wanting to go anywhere.

Between the two individuals I think the child acted more maturely. And between the two groups I think acted roughly equally maturely just one group was compassed of children and the other adults.

Official statement from the Student in question. The death threats are ridiculous let alone from certified twitter users, I wonder what Twitters reaction to this will be.

Death threats aren't just ridiculous. They're unequivocally heinous. I can kind of agree with some level of doxxing in some cases (like when the chuds who attended the Unite The Right rally got outed as white supremacists to their families and employers), but there's a big gap between that and threatening someone's life. Even if the kids had been outright violent towards Phillips, that would not have warranted them or their loved ones receiving death threats.

I agree kids should never be doxxed or attacked for political purposes but I'm not sure what idiot let plenty of students from a school go to a political rally wearing MAGA hats. I get it's a catholic school so isn't really a school but still. They were guaranteeing something would go wrong.
