To be fair, there *are* some students actually mocking the Native guy, which is pretty damn clear if you look at some of the background kids. The organized "school cheer" happened well before the native guy showed up.

While the kids were dumbasses, I feel likenthe Chaperones for them were incredibly irresponsible on numerous occasions. From encouraging their students to get riled up, to not trying to remove the students from the situation as was their responsibility.

Don't get me wrong, the Black Israelites were fucking awful, but the last thing you do is engage people like that. They are awful people who say awful things to everybody to get a rise out.of them.

And the Native shouldn't have interjected himself ino the situation, making him a dumbass.

As I have said before, everybody here was looking for a confrontation, and shockingly they found one when they were specifically looking for it.

Clearly the true perpetrator is Abraham Lincoln for just sitting in his memorial and watching this all happen. Smh

Well to be fair to Abe, he would have to get up out of his chair to do anything, and if this incident has shown us anything, standing while white is apparently immensely offensive.

Out of all the groups present they did the least amount wrong, the Balck Hebrews were the worst, Mr. Phillip’s stupidity of not explaining what he was doing is second, and the boys third. Of course the media is the one to blame the most on for beginning the drums of war against them and fanning a social media mob. This would have been avoided if it wasn’t for their irresponsibility.

Acting like a giant group of douches is certainly not a "good" thing. On our school trips, we never felt the need to act like these nitwits did. Sure, we would do some silly things, but not get into giant idiotic screaming matches and the like. It is exceedingly childish how they acted, and while they are minors, they are still teenagers and some level of responsibility should be expected from them. They aren't 10 year olds. They are 16. There is a massive amount of difference between how you expect a 16 year old to act than a 10 year old, particularly on the national mall.

The doxing, death threats, etc. Are way over the line, obviously. Frankly, this shouldn't be news. But acting like the kids were some sort of saints is just plain idiotic. They were being massive douches, and their chaperones encouraged this behavior and did jackall to stop it.

No, they did plenty wrong, mostly revolving around immature misbehaviour in the form of mocking and taunting, and crude and brutal jokes (disgusting, but also a disgustingly common joke in any school. I would caution against taking this as endorsement by the stundent of rape, however.) All of which deserve punishment.

Most of what the kids were accused of doing? Yeah, they did mostly none of that (besides the mocking and taunting) and people have been scrapping the bottom of the barrel for anything to justify the mobbing, doxxing and threats.

Yes and no. Yes there are some things we expect teenagers to do over 10 year old's in an instance like this, I'd say they're marginally the same. I teach high-school juniors, and as much as i love my students they really have no sense of cause and effect. And they're hindered in that regard as their pre-fontal cortexes are underdeveloped at that age. You get a bunch of teens together, they're liable to just about anything. Yes they should be held to some level of responsibility, but it should be more of "this is a teachable moment" rather than "GET THEM! RUIN THEIR LIVES!!"

You're right though that Chaperones also had part to play, I also led a MFL pilgrimage, and my students were also present at the Lincoln Memorial and we witnessed the Indigenous peoples march. And we kept a tight hand on our students, cancelled their sightseeing time and went straight to the March after taking photos because we recognized how the situation could turn bad.

Certainly how the media has protrayed it and how hige it blew up is wrong. Still, I feel the other side is just forgiving the behavior ofnthe students entirely.

As for the chaperones allow me to explain why I put them at a huge fault for the interaction: according tk the students, after getting confronted for the first time by the Black Israelites, the students asked their chaperones if they could do their school chant in response to the Black Israelites. Which the chaperones allowed. Meanwhile, they did nothing to move the group along from them, and seem to have been fine with the kids getting into a literal shouting match woth the Black Israelites.

Nathan Phillips was an idiot, but he was an idiot by circumstance. The Black Israelites are just raging assholes to everyone. The Chaperones encouraged and allowed the students to get riled up and rowdy.
