How do you see our collective moral and ethical cup? Half fu

Postby GnosticChristian » Mon Jan 14, 2019 10:50 am

How do you see our collective moral and ethical cup? Half full or overflowing with goodness?

Not to be a bean counter that ignores the evil that is still with us, but if I look strictly at the statistics for what I call the evil markers, crime, death by violence including war, poverty, poor health and education; I see them all at the best levels we have ever enjoyed.

This is in spite of the few places where the stats are backsliding, which ironically includes the U.S., a Christian nation; whose education level is going down, along with its moral sense.

I will let you find whatever stats you might be interested in and will only offer the stats spoken of, at the end of this link.
Richard Dawkins - Sex, Death and the Meaning of Life
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLulcfyqrc0

I see our cup running over in spite of the vile and immoral mainstream religions that we are maintaining, for God only knows why. We can thank all the gods that the religious are not walking their talk and are following more moral ways.

How do you see our collective moral and ethical cup? Half full; or overflowing with goodness?

Regards
DL

Christians don't have virtue unless they do charity, their doctrine consists in refraining from things, pathologizing sex, etc.

The glass is empty with them. Mahayana says to have infinite compassion, but followers mostly just meditate. Again, the glass is empty.

Using the thread title as inspiration, I'd say that it is half fu(cked).

It's really simple. Ethics is common sense. It doesn't require religion. I do think that meditation is a good practice, but there isn't necessarily anything "spiritual" about meditation because an atheist can meditate. I wouldn't go so far that "religion" is bad per se,
but (at least for me), I don't think that it is necessary to be an ethical or compassionate person.

The term refers to the fact that it is a sense about common things, not that the sense, itself, is common.

I don't think it's possible to generalize humanity's moral direction as a whole. Our standard of living has certainly increased, and in many ways we can say that we've moved past some of the barbarity of our past, but I think we must be held accountable relative to our era. In other words, we don't get to pat ourselves on the back for such things as that the Atlantic slave trade no longer exists and that women have equal voting rights. One must rise up to face the injustice of their own generation, to fight for the causes of their own era, to scrutinize contemporary institutions and ask what norms of our society will our progeny condemn as savagery.

If you fill up the cup to half, it is half-full.

If you fill up the cup to full and pour it down to half, it is half-empty.

Nope...

Common sense is a basic ability to perceive, understand, and judge things, which is shared by ("common to") nearly all people, and can be reasonably expected of nearly all people without any need for debate.

And technically the cup is always full, just with different contents (50% water, 50% air).

Empty as all hell if you ask me. Half of humanity is still starving, murdering each other over idiotic pointless crap or just too corrupt to live and the other half is so rich and detached from reality that they have the time and energy to spare on getting upset over trivial pointless idiocies and the guile to push that on the rest of the world. And we are doing all of this in an age of ever dwindling resources with our time frame to get our act together and survive as a species dwindling by the second.

The only reason why I can't call the modern day and age the worst in human history as far as morality is concerned is because we had the little episode called the 20th century.
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

The above post contains hyperbole, metaphoric language, embellishment and exaggeration. It may also include badly translated figures of speech and misused idioms. Analyze accordingly.

Hmm, that depends, I still have an issue with a lot of the Christians in the US, particularly the dominionist evangelical groups that I view as highly immoral. I think that over all though we tend to be doing better despite these groups.

In America, there's not enough Christians and whatever Christians actually follow the Bible are persecuted. Still, humanity seems to not be completely evil.

That, but capitalism. And Frodo would be Corbyn.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.
