Yesterday, the mayor of Gdańsk, Paweł Adamowicz, was stabbed at a charity concert. The mayor, previously a member of the Civic Platform, was an independent candidate.
The attacker, who called himself Stefan, ran onto the stage, attacked the official and said that "I was jailed but innocent. ... Civic Platform tortured me. That’s why Adamowicz just died.” According to the police, he had a media badge; it is unknown if the document was a forgery.
The man previously spent a few years in prison for bank robberies. He has been captured and is now being questioned. However, the mayor is dead, despite a 5-hour attempt at reconstructive surgery. The deputy mayor is currently holding the office.
Jarosław Kaczyński, the chairman of the ruling Law and Justice party, said that "I’m expressing great pain for the tragic death due to the criminal attack on mayor Pawel Adamowicz. We express solidarity with his family".
What do you think?
I'd say this should be an impulse to review the policies concerning the mentally ill, ex-convicts and public event safety, as the attack seems to have been out of insanity, not political aims.
