Mayor of Gdańsk, Paweł Adamowicz, stabbed to death.

Postby Petrolheadia » Mon Jan 14, 2019 7:58 am

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/worl ... 27126.html

Yesterday, the mayor of Gdańsk, Paweł Adamowicz, was stabbed at a charity concert. The mayor, previously a member of the Civic Platform, was an independent candidate.

The attacker, who called himself Stefan, ran onto the stage, attacked the official and said that "I was jailed but innocent. ... Civic Platform tortured me. That’s why Adamowicz just died.” According to the police, he had a media badge; it is unknown if the document was a forgery.

The man previously spent a few years in prison for bank robberies. He has been captured and is now being questioned. However, the mayor is dead, despite a 5-hour attempt at reconstructive surgery. The deputy mayor is currently holding the office.

Jarosław Kaczyński, the chairman of the ruling Law and Justice party, said that "I’m expressing great pain for the tragic death due to the criminal attack on mayor Pawel Adamowicz. We express solidarity with his family".

What do you think?

I'd say this should be an impulse to review the policies concerning the mentally ill, ex-convicts and public event safety, as the attack seems to have been out of insanity, not political aims.

Well, the attacker did state his motives. I guess you could say it's more about revenge than a political agenda, that he blames this party for what was done to him so he chose a member of that party as a surrogate for his vengeance.

I'm not sure about the attacker being insane though. Perhaps that is the case, but I feel like murderers are too often labelled insane without sufficient proof. Some are insane, but not all.

For example, let's look at some mass shooters. James Holmes, the movie theater shooter, definitely seems to be on the psychotic side. But the Columbine shooters (whose thoughts and motives can be found in their diaries) didn't seem to have any sort of delusions or psychosis. They made a very deliberate choice with full understanding of what it meant. And then with serial killers, you have Son of Sam who was almost certainly insane, but you also have Ted Bundy who absolutely had a grip on reality and understood what he was doing.

My point is, sometimes sane people deliberately do fucked up things, whether out of sadism, for revenge, or for personal gain. And I think we have to recognize that. I think it's a thing a lot of people don't want to recognize, people want to think that no one in their right mind is a killer, but that's not the case.

A forgery.

"Falsificate" is a verb, not a noun though...

It's like saying "that thing is a running"...

Truly awful news. such acts of barbarism have no place anywhere. I hope the perpetrator spends life in prison.

Take it up with the writer then.

The word doesn't appear in the article. The OP seems to have introduced it here.

EDIT: The word has been changed. Good job OP.

My condolences to the victim's family.
Gotta say though, really smart move on the culprit's part there.
