Means it is shorting out somewhere, it in fact could be damp.

It wasn't actually overheating, but I kept getting prompts that the phone was overheating, and the phone immediately shuts down after. Hence submerging it in dry, uncooked rice, might help absorb all of the moisture. If it still doesn't work when I try turning it on when I get home, I'm calling time of death and asking my Dad for a loan for a new phone.

Can you take the battery out and dry that seperately?

Silica gel is probably the best, which is the stuff they usually put in the box of anything sensitive to moisture.

I neither have a cat nor silica gel. But my Southeast Asian ass DOES have a huge - and I mean huge - tub of rice. It'll have to do.
