You might need to make it a hydraulic guillotine, Atlanteans are pretty tough.

BATMAN? Really, a guy dresses up as a bat and beats people up and throws bat-a-rangs and has a no kill code?
Some of the Batman media I enjoy but the idea is inherently... well... kind of cheesy.
Superman is a dated design but take it as you will.
But I still think Aquaman is WHOLE NEW LEVEL

All superheroes are pretty goofy when looked at under a certain perspective. Modern iterations tend not to be. Aquaman, for example, is badass in the DCEU.

I feel like Marvel's crowd is generally less cheesy.
Captain America's about the worst offender but everyone else is fine. I don't even have a problem with Thor.

Spiderman and Ironman definitely were on their initial release. I think you should consider that it's just the older art style you have an issue with.

"Hey guys, let's start a comic where Atlantis is real and you have this superhero who can talk to fish. Let's call him AQUA MAN!"
Like did it NOT seem cheesy back then or?

I think IM means that the character is goofy because he was created in the 40s, as opposed to some gritty 90s Leifield character.

For most of comic history Marvel was generaly considered both cheesier and less mature than DC. Like how Ironman basically ran around in a giant piece of metal, or how Spider-Man wasn't even a man for the first decade or so of his series' run, or how Hawkeye is just bloody ridiculous in the comics.

AQUA MAN??????? OCEAN MASTER?
The former sounds like a tooth paste (Aquafresh anyone?). And Ocean Master? Is that a rock band? These characters are OLD and honestly, quite cheesy, and even in the names it shows.

Many of the DC characters just look really outdated and extremely cheesy.
Hawk Girl, Wonder Woman, Aquaman are probably the worst offenders.
Batman is pretty bad too but he gets a bit of a pass because I enjoy some of the darker edgier stuff he appears in.
...
I don’t know. I’m just fine with Marvel character design. I had reservations about Captain America but they managed to make him look really cool in the movies. Chris Evans looks like a boss and I like what they did with his costume in the latest Infinity Wars movie.
Call it a bias if you will
When the Avengers come together I don’t bat an eye. But I have a very hard time taking most of the DC cast seriously and when they appear together on screen it gets worse possibly.

The title Genghis Khan means "Oceanic Ruler", so the Atlanteans using a similar title for their High King doesn't seem so weird reallyInfected Mushroom wrote:

DC has always had the issue that their characters are all essentially gods, Supermen who are so powerful that nother but other Supers can challenge them - the whole popularity of Batman is based on the fact that he is the one Human who can stand against the gods and defeat them through wit and tenacity. When DC first published they were essentially creating a new mythology for 20th Century America and hence we get all the Christ imagery with Superman, and the characters of Wonder Woman and Aquaman being directly derived from Greek myth.
on the other hand, Marvel as a product of the 60s had the luxury of being a bit more iconoclasmic in their approach and thus in the main they forgo godly powers and instead their characters are enhanced humans with all the weaknesses and foibles of normal people, who rise above their limitations to become Heroes.
In the end though its all fantasy and wish fulfillment and equally both ridiculous and awesome

Okay this makes sense but...
who came up with the Hawk Girl idea? Like HOW does it not look 100% ridiculous? Like if you Google it, IT LOOKS SO BAD holy...
Also... Wonder Woman blocking bullets with steel bracelets is borderline one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen (and I've seen some stunts in anime that require suspension of disbelief but blocking bullets with two steel bracelets on the arm has got to be one of the top 10)

I mean, they're supposed to be indestructible bracers forged by a god, not just regular steel.

But the blocking movement just LOOKS so ridiculous
It still makes no sense that she has to try to block the bullets with the steelthough because isn’t she bulletproof like Aqua Man and Superman?
I’m fairly sure she’s taken direct hits from alien lasers and still lived so why wouldn’t she just shrug off small arms fire?
You’re telling me she can fist fight mind controlled Superman semi decently, take damage from him and live....
But guns scare her so she bothers to block?

Lasers are bullets are different things and injure in different ways. You’re telling me she can fist fight mind controlled Superman semi decently, take damage from him and live....

Being strong and fast is different from being bulletproof. Being punched, even by Superman, is different from being shot.
