Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro Moves to Recreate Manifest Destiny

Postby Torrocca » Fri Jan 04, 2019 12:35 pm

https://earther.gizmodo.com/brazil-s-new-president-moves-to-kick-indigenous-people-1831466539

Just hours after taking office, Brazil's new president, Jair Bolsonaro, signs legislation that moves the protections of the Amazon and indigenous tribes away from the Justice Ministry to the Ministry of Agriculture, which'll most likely lead to the further degradation of the Amazon and the destruction of numerous native groups.

In my opinion, this is a bunch of bullshit and just shows that any claims that Bolsonaro never meant things that he's consistently believed in for years are bullshit, too. So much for him being the "better option," like so many right-wingers and """libertarians""" claimed.

What's your thoughts, NSG?

I, for one, welcome foreign intervention to topple this fascist regime.

Brazil's government will harm the entire world in the long run, not just Brazil.

The Amazon is a vital natural area for the world at large, and is important for indigenous residents. Boycotts mentioned in the article could be a good start.

It might be a little soon for that - other things could be tried first.

Every right-wing type who is a libertarian is only one until the intervention favours them or screw someone they don't like.

This is not at all shocking to anybody who recognised Bolansaro as the pseudo-fascist he was and is.

The whole 'better option' thing that they went on about re: Bolansaro was always bullshit. It's just easier to look away when someone else gets fucked over by it.

That's unfortunate (protection of the Amazon is important, this doesn't necessarily mean he will harm it though), but I hope he can make desperately-needed economic improvements to his country

Unfortunate, but frankly I think that Brasil had little in terms of alternatives to Bolsonaro.
The reputation of PT (Partido dos Trabalhadores) was tarnished by Dilma Rousseff's impeachment and the country's economic crisis. This leaved the door open for any populist to take advantage of the average brasilian's anger and (let's face it) ignorance. Bolsonaro simply took that opportunity, and there we have him.

Will the Amazon forest turn into the Amazon desert? I don't know. I can't imagine the rest of the world just calmy watching the Earth's lungs being obliterated, but in this day and age, seemingly anything is possible.

So it's gone from being "illegal" but not actively policed to government policy. Nothing changes. The forest still gets chopped down and bulldozed and its inhabitants massacred.

Who you gonna get to join it? America is in the throws of Trump, Poland and Hungary are friends with him so the EU won't do shit, the Russians won't, the Chinese won't and the Indians won't even if they could. Your unfortunate reality is that you most live with the knowledge there is nothing that can be done to do what you seek.

You would've thought Africans getting slaughtered with Maxim guns would be enough to dissuade such notions, nevermind the fact Brazil has jet fighters and napalm.

What sickens me equally are the thinly veiled apologists who have been to this thread, and those who will come to this thread to peddle their facade of sympathy combined with apathy.

Bolsonaro campaigned explicitly, not subtly, on a platform and general message that was one of authoritarianism, militarism, and a sort of sicko, twisted idea of half-assed personality cult/strongman vibe. This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

Unfortunately Bolsonaro seeks to host a US base to counter Russian influence in Venezuela, so hopefully the fallout from his policies leads to some kind of international condemnation. If Brazil erupts into open fighting, all the better.

As a long-term solution that ultimately favors the Brazilian people? Of course not.

But as a stumbling block for Bolsonaro's regime which sadly buys into Russophobic claptrap, civil strife would definitely do its job.

The fallout from this policy will not illicit much in the way of international condemnation, and countering Russia and Venezuela is a good thing. The former because it's Russia, the second because an unstable Venezuela is bad for Brazil.

Besides, Brazil's crime rate makes the worst places in the US look like Luxembourg by comparison.

Taking into account your country's geopolitics, and own sphere of influence is now "Russophobic", along with criticisms of Russian foreign policy, Russian domestic policy, and anything to do with Russia or Russians.

Venezuela is Brazil's neighbour. If a power from several thousand miles away seeks to influence the government there and largely prop up an illegitimate regime that is contributing to a growing humanitarian crisis, then it's in Brazil's interests to act against perceived threats. It's not your or the Kremlin's place to disagree.
