"proven we can get by" criteria, we have not instantly turned into a Mad Max style dystopia.

Well, we've proven we can get by without 25% of the government. Now lets try for 50%.
Oh, and if Congress got off their asses and passed a budget instead of this temporary funding bullshit, we might avoid these shutdowns in the future.

Nothings really changed now has it? A few non-essential government employees aren't getting paid. Boo Hoo.
Here's a point: there should be NO non-essential government employees (or services for that matter). Once the government goes beyond the essentials, any taxes levied to pay for it are indeed, theft.

Big Jim supports illegal immigration and terrorism.

In a sense. It's very clear that many or even most of the congressional GOP doesn't really like Trump as a person, and only supports him because it is marginally valuable to keep together an appearance of party cohesion so that the presidency remains Republican and so that Republican congressmen get to use the party war chest in their reelection campaigns. As soon as the bulk of the GOP's political power decides that Trump is too costly a figurehead to keep propping up, they will dump him and move on to the next cryptofascist imbecile on the list.
Of course, they might never do that, and just keep attempting to justify his behavior and policies regardless of how much it costs them in the opinion polls. Trump might be a "too big to fail" sort of politician for them, only removable once he's already ousted from the White House.

Serious question: why do the republicans have so many.. mentally challenged.. people on their presidential candidates list ? Bush jr, Sarah Palin, Trump - certainly they can find better in their half of the population ?
