Because people need to eat and whales are a good source of food in that part of the world. Not everyone is as fortunate as you.

As someone who eats meat and consumes animal products, I'm aware of the innate hypocrisy in speaking against the killing of one type of animal while ignoring another. However, the fact is that I cannot ethically justify my consumption of animal products either. As someone who lives in an industrialized country with enough money and options to choose, there is absolutely no reason why I shouldn't be a vegan. I'll be honest and admit that it's mostly laziness and self-indulgence that holds me back.

As to whales, I do believe that levels of sentience matter, that is it a greater ethical problem to kill a whale than an insect, and that the more sentience an animal has the more rights it ought to have. So I do condemn whaling and do not think that this is a cultural difference that should be respected.

Nobody.

Humans are the apex predator. I'm no biologist or anything, but I'm fairly certain that apex predators are generally not the ones being hunted. That's the point of the saying "hunt or be hunted". It doesn't mean you're going to kill or be killed, it means that every species must fit into one or the other. In this case, humans, we're the species that does the hunting.

That doesn't mean we have a carté blanche to wipe out species, because that'll eventually mean life might become too difficult for us, or even impossible, in the long run. However, the idea that we shouldn't consume animal goods is just as ludicrous as hunting ourselves to extinction. In the end, humans are an animal in every aspect of the word: We need to fit in with the ecosystem that we thrive in, or we go extinct.

I grew up mostly on a diet of seafood, heavily whale based. Most rural Icelandic villages here rely on it
