University of Columbia Student, Author of Time and the Multiverse: Selected Writings on Novel Physical Theories, and white male Julian von Abele has come under fire recently for giving this (HATE-SPEECH WARNING: CLICK ON LINK AT YOUR OWN RISK) drunken rant next to a group of ethnic minority students. As a result, Julian von Abele has taken the unwanted role of both Public Enemy #1 and White Pride World-Wide Prophet.

Tim Wise gives a very powerful and thought-provoking tweet on the issue at hand, circa 2018 (colourized).

How he got there and context: von Abele says that he was on his way home from a night-out with friends, when he got into an argument with two other students about Trump, and how Trump supports endorse sexual assault. As von Abele presumably got louder, and his intoxication kicked in further, the crowd grew, and the argument devolved. I know, as clear as mud.

von Abele is a Trump supporter, and has voted for Trump.

Anyways, OP won't drone on much more about his own take on the issue, because OP obviously holds a lot of bias, but, I will say that von Abele's drunken speech could be taken one of two ways,

1. He really likes the white race and western civilization.
or
2. He's coming out of the closet.

That's just one example. Western civilization is definately superior, the world owes us a lot, and it's mostly white. But extremely major contributions have been made by other races to our success as a civilization and our model. Yes, westernized individuals, but other races nonetheless.

The lack of education on these kind of individuals should not be held against people who conclude that whites are simply the best after justifiably noting western civilization is the best, and then based on lack of discourse on non-white contributions, conclude whites are too. It is ignorance, not malice, that fuels these outbursts, and treating them as malicious will not fix them, and does nothing to address the underlying points being made by either side.

It's fine to like white people and be proud of their history. But that history doesn't occur in isolation, and is only meaningful through its connection to other peoples.

Well of course that is true, but it is also important to take into account the absolute state that this madman is in. He's intoxicated, and not in his right mind, but he did say that he "doesn't hate other races". Yes, the nations of modern Europe played a major role in leading humanity into what we call modernity. Yes, the most prominent figures in the scientific, cultural, political and economic progress of modernity were overwhelmingly white. Yes, lots of the values and advancements we as a species got from European-led modernity are great.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut I'm gonna be the mother of all buzzkills and point out that y'all didn't do it alone. Y'all couldn't do it alone. Y'all needed resources that you couldn't find in Europe, and labour that you couldn't extract from your arbitrarily designated white brethren, and chances are that a lot of potential advancements that could have been born from elsewhere in the world were forever snuffed out or otherwise undermined by your exploitation. It doesn't make white people in general or Europeans in particular inherently evil, but it should put any notion of collective European pride in a less blindly braggadocious perspective. We can and should celebrate the achievements of the great philosophers of the European Enlightenment, but we shouldn't deify them and gloss over the negative consequences of their ideas, or the obvious blind spots in their ideas. And we definitely shouldn't blindly embrace whiteness or Westerness as self-evident categories, nor as categories with a unified superior heritage. Not just because the historical consequences of that have always led to brutality and often irrational condescension those classified as non-white and non-Western, but also because it glosses over the fact that the people placed within that same category aren't really all equal. The supposedly superior white European heritage is often framed as the heritage of long dead philosophers, great capitalists, visionary political leaders and prestigious artists, which erases the fact that a lot of their accomplishments were made possible by people in their own "race" that they exploited, whose work they looked down upon, whose culture they demeaned.
