I fucking knew he would flip on the plan to pull out of Syria. So much for great nations not fighting endless wars.

Yeah, sure, 7.5k armed troops and contractors and none of them are fighting. I'll believe that when Trump gets Mexico to pay for his wall.

It's not a given that there'll be a recession, but the expectation is certainly for a slow-down. It's got nothing to do with learning anything from the financial crisis though.

It's a simple as the Republic Congress having engaged in a huge Keynesian stimulus exercise, which has now run its course and is starting to fade.

The Fed, rightly or wrongly, took the better conditions to mean that interest rates should be brought back to what one might call a 'normal' stance, and so monetary stimulus is also fading.

Put the two together, and you get a growth slowdown.

There aren’t 7500 Soldiers in Syria. Overall plan is to leave 400 Soldiers.

I don't fucking care what the administration claims they are "planning" for, there are 7.5k soldiers in Syria now.

It's around 2,500 so, a third of what he's claiming.

Yup. Those are the correct numbers. It’ll take months before the actual withdrawal even starts though. Like I stated before their purpose is to do SFAB work.

Trump is expanding the facilities at Guantanamo Bay, preparing it to house more inmates for a longer period of time.

Either a war crime, a crime against humanity, or both, depending on if you think the war on terror is an actual war. Pick your poison.

Eh, not all contractors are fighters though. I'll admit that when you do include contractors, it probably does reflect your number of 7,500. Regardless, a pullout, especially a reckless one originally proposed by Trump, would be disastrous. As much as I would like to end the endless wars, it does call for sometimes a somewhat permanent presence in some situations, especially since it can come back to bite us and threaten our national security (see ISIS). Of course, it's going to take more than brute strength to win over there, and a sprinkling of our ideals through education, economic opportunities, and diplomacy will ensure that. It's a long term strategy that no one has fully attempted, likely due to people demanding short term results (I'm looking at you, America...)

I never claimed that every last one of them is a dedicated combat contractor. Uxupox, on the other hand, claimed that not a single one of them, private mercenary or government soldier, is actually fighting.

Our endless warfare in Iraq is what created the breeding ground for ISIS.

Indeed. We will, of course, have to wait for diplomacy until after we get the buffoon out of office who would like to nuke Iran for existing.

What caused "a breeding ground for ISIS" was the fact that the US military left Iraq and ended up with an Iraqi government and Armed Forces which was corrupt and not motivated at all to fight against ISIS. Remember when you could see ISIS with "American" military equipment? That's the equipment they got when the Iraqi Army, propped up with millions of US dollars, deserted en masse/surrendered without a fight.

It's hard to wrap one's head around what happened here, but what I gathered from it:

ICE set up a fake university in order to lure in illegal immigrants in order to deport them. When you get a student visa, you are supposed to be enrolled in a real university. Since Farmington is a fake university, every student who was enrolled there didn't comply with the terms of the visa, and were therefore guilty of an immigration infraction. As such, they are all being deported.

Many students took out loans in their home countries in order to come to the US and study at Farmington, meaning that ICE basically invited those people to commit immigration infractions by making the trap.

I feel that this is a perfect example of entrapment. Of course, since their immigration violations are civil violations, not criminal violations, entrapment doesn't really matter.

We already had a thread on this and the response basically boiled down to "it's their own fault for not trying to show up to class and then not immediately finding somewhere else to study when they realised it wasn't real".

Wait, what? I'm torn between asking for the thread in question so I can see how people can justify basically scamming people into...wait, how can we even call it a crime? Getting defrauded by ICE and then getting punished. Or just shaking my head and adding it to the fucking list.

We dont have the info to say this was entrapment. It sounds like the university was just a made up destination made to look real to trick a system of Visa exploitation. It sounds like private recruiting companies take cash to fake records for students who want to stay in the us past their Visa date. These kids then have to do something illegal to even start applying. That's why they are getting indicted because trying to apply to the university itself is a crime. They are giving false information and false documentation, which in itself is a crime. In court, the state will show that these kids applied with the intention of not going to classes and with false records. Theres a reason the recruiters are being charged.

But just saying its entrapment and calling on the abolish ice movement before seeing evidence does nothing.

Where did I call to abolish ICE exactly?

When those kids did something they would not have done otherwise because of Farmington, then yes, it's entrapment. Doesn't matter how illegal the thing was they did: would they have done something similar if Farmington wasn't there? For many, you could say that no, they would not have.

When the government pulls shit like this, it's very important to be critical of that conduct, and see if it holds up to the highest standard of legality.

According to the Washington post article, the students were told on the front end that university did not exist. That makes it illegal by default.

Students knew that the scheme was illegal “and that discretion should be used when discussing the program with others,” prosecutors wrote in their indictment, which was filed Jan. 15 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

The federal indictments name eight people in eight states who allegedly were students at the school and recruited additional students to enroll. All have been arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit visa fraud and harboring aliens for profit. They face a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

It looks like everyone involved knew the school didn't exist or at least acted as tho they'd been there to ensnare this operation. All the feds did was set up the school online.
