The Late Republic didn't really have rigid political factions so much as groups of people in alliances of convenience to get more power and/or cushy government jobs.

Not partisanship so much as corruption killed the Republic.

It still however had sides. Doesn't change the underlying assertion being made.

It does tho. Since the Roman "sides" weren't exactly ideological. Both were fairly comfortable passing legislation the other would want to undermine their support and both worked together when reforms had to be done.

The partisanship is different in the US in that it's quite literally the opposite of that. It's "the other side is evil"

Not even to mention the comparison falls flatter when considering the literal gangs that would occasionally roam the streets of Rome to hound political opponents or the riots sparked by politicians. No, we're quite different.
