China has more to lose in the trade war than us. We buy a lot more from them than they do from us.

If it’s the that simple and winnable why not place utterly exorbitant tariffs on all Chinese goods and cripple China?

We (and by we I mean Uncle Sam) don’t want to crash them. We want to push them up to the cliff and threaten to throw them off if they don’t do what we want.

It’s uncle sam’s historically normal “we make a deal or I can shoot you” technique. It’s patent pending.

You forget that the Chinese population will go back to living in huts and eating pig whisker soup long before the American population will accept a delay in the new iPhone. I'm not sure Trump knows this.

Fair, but I don't think Uncle Sam will really shove them over the cliff. The best maneuver is to keep them teetering on the edge until they blink.

Why would they blink? The elite in charge will maintain their standard of living whatever happens and the plebs have no choice. The US population will blink first since they have a meaningful vote

Not really, no. We could stop trading with china completely and it wouldn't cripple the economy. It wouldn't help for sure, and we'd probably go into a recession, but it wouldn't cripple the economy. Our trade with China just isn't big enough to do that, particularly as a seller.

Because if we push them off the cliff, they will lose their regional influence as they will be unable to maintain their economic superiority in the region, along with their military expenditures.

Sure, the elites won't starve, but they'll lose all the power outside of China that they have grown accustomed to.

I'm not saying that; I fully agree it's not winnable. What I am saying is that it will hurt the Chinese too. Quite honestly, it's going to hurt the entire global economy, which China and the US are a part of.

China won't be hurt much by it.

Their slowing GDP Growth says otherwise. As Gallo has said, we buy a lot more from them, then they do us. China's economy is heavily reliant on exports and is still developing despite being the second largest. You start buying less from them and their GDP growth (and other indexes) slow, decreasing revenues. In the case of tariffs, while it may increase the price on consumer goods (not good for us), if consumers are buying less goods, than businesses make less money; less money means you don't raise as much in taxes, which hurts both nations since government is reliant on taxes (or if you want to be like the United States for the past 30+ years, you borrow money by issuing bonds). A Trade War hurts both China and the US, and it eventually spills into the global economy, hurting everyone including China more.

For context here's a really good overview of China's export and import economy - https://atlas.media.mit.edu/en/profile/country/chn/

To understand the winds one can read the tone of the media and they're pretty adamant China won't give in. Ultimately this is a hiding to nothing. It's a pointless waste of money that brings pain only to the poor.

I mean, to your point, Trump MIGHT push them off the cliff. He's a madman at his core.

But if that is done, it will hurt everyone. It'll hurt China more than us, and east asia pretty hard (as their biggest customer goes broke), but we'll probably have a recession for a bit, and then emerge stronger than before.

To put it another way, we'll get a black eye, but they'll be beaten unconscious.

I'd prefer that NOT happen, but it is the logical play out.

We dont get much in imports from those countries. Mexico and Canada should be retaliating with massive tariffs on our goods.

China will keep raising tariffs and eventually you crash the economy. They wont be hurt by it but we will

Actually we export less to China than we import from them. We can slap a shit ton of tariffs on Chinese imports and they cannot match us

Killing US businesses that rely on those imports, you can't just switch business overnight, global trade is complex.

This is explicitly true - which is why you'll notice the tariffs are going on a bit at a time, more and more and more, to avoid shocking the global supply chain.

Possibly more so than the US.

Question is, will that change anything?
I'm guessing no. Purely because if American citizens get hurt hard enough, they'll vote for a different president.
China doesn't have that luxury, and it's not like the populace is suddenly going to be so fed up that they'll revolt and overthrow Xi Jinping anytime soon, so its leadership can keep this going a lot longer.

You clearly know nothing about China. You cannot win a trade war with China

You are the one who knows nothing about China dude. Don’t go projecting your lack of knowledge on everyone else.

The Chinese economy relies on exports. We export les to China than we import from them. Therefore we can put tariffs on nearly all Chinese imports which is roughly $200 billion while China can only put tariffs on $50 billion American exports.

You can seriously tank the Chinese economy if you also bring the EU, Canada, Mexico, and others into the fold. Which is what Trump should have done, created a trade agreement that requires all members to put tariffs on all Chinese imports.

When over half of China’s imports are being tariffed out the ass their economy will plummet. At that point we should start funding any group that is anti-CPC or separatist.

Then we Nationalize any business that’s essential to the US and roll out a huge welfare program.

I hope not.

China literally runs concentration camps for muslims and other "undesirables" and forcibly harvest organs from them to give to their own people. If that's the future, the world is so fucked.

Well yes, hence Trump should be a bit more cognisant of the fact that America does need to be aligned with global allies rather than pulling out of every treaty and insulting other countries all the time.

Sure, but blindly siding with a regime that legit thinks the problem with Hitler was that he would hunt dissidents but not use ALL the parts is not a good idea. If you're right, we all lose.
