Study finds women prefer "benevolently sexist" men

Postby Imperial Hugonia » Sat Dec 15, 2018 1:43 pm

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog ... r-woke-men

Gul and Kupfer take a related tack, but head in a slightly different direction. They suggest that female interest in sexist men, specifically men who display “benevolent sexism” may be seen by women as being more interested in investing resources in a woman.

Benevolent sexism is a concept describing a form of sexism which is overtly less hostile and misogynistic, and are beliefs that I was taught, as a man from the US South. Benevolent sexism includes beliefs that:

Women should be “put on a pedestal”
Women should be cherished and protected by men
Men should be willing to sacrifice to provide for women
Women are more virtuous than men
Women are more refined and pure, compared to men.

Notably women who were both more and less feminist displayed similar levels of attraction, and it wasn't influenced by feelings of unsafeness:

Gul and Kupfer conducted several separate experiments, showing that their results did replicate in different samples and using different methods (an important strategy in today’s replication crisis), and that the effect was apparent both potential mates, AND in work colleagues. Even in men who were not being scoped out as potential intimate partners, women were more likely to see sexist men as more attractive. Women who were both more and less feminist displayed similar levels of attraction to sexist men, so this effect isn’t the result of women not being “woke” enough.

One of the experiments tested whether women’s ratings of sexist men varied depending on cues about there being more hostile men around from whom the woman might need protection. But here again, women’s attraction towards sexist men wasn’t influenced by her potential need for safety from more hostile men.

Link to the study itself: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10 ... lCode=pspc

Really throws a wrench in the claims of people who say that feminists are interested in breaking down male gender roles.

Though before people claim it's biological I'm curious about something, if it is instinctual among women, how would lesbian relationships be affected by such an instinct?

Discuss, NS.

Seems to go hand in hand with the existing scholarship that men who do not treat women in "positively" sexist ways are viewed as sexist.

Yes! This in my view, is confirming what the Conservative movement knew all along. Tons of women might pretend to like Feminist claptrap, but in reality, most ladies aren't into it. Instead, they're fine with a man who knows his place and expects women to know theirs and treats them accordingly. Women aren't inferior to men, it is just that men are traditionally the ones that're supposed to get out there and earn the money and status for a household. The women are better suited for the child rearing.

That's not really what it is or what it implies. Women, whether they identify as feminist or not, are more attracted to sexist men. This is probably something they're conscious of as well given that:

Despite being attracted to them, and seeing them as good mates and partners, the women saw these males as being undermining and patronizing men who were more likely to place restrictions on the women.

This stuff is barely sexist though, "women are better than men" is all I see, which is what Mark Hamil recently said to thunderous feminist accolades.

Reducing gender roles to fruit is a bad argument.

Nobody said destroyed, he specifically said it torpedoed the idea of feminism was interested in breaking down male gender roles. That's not necessarily a valid leap but these desirable forms of sexism are rooted in traditional gender roles and feminists don't seem to find them any less attractive than non-feminists.

That’s kind of what I thought when I read this. If someone is viewing someone in a biased way, but it results in them treating them in a unfairly positive fashion, people are going to probably subconsciously enjoy it.

Personally, I’d be a little uncomfortable if a significant other showed me such blatantly preferential behaviour because that’s just who I am, but the attitudes listed also tend to be highly desired in dating situations. Getting that treatment in general (even if not in a romantic way) probably naturally feels good.

Though if we’re looking for true gender equality, it does raise the question of whether or not we should be actively looking of non-malevolent biased behaviour. Personally, “White Knights” and “Nice Guys” are enough to make me say yes, even if they are the cringey extremes of this.

I actually highlighted that earlier, these men are viewed as more attractive but also viewed as manipulative and disrespectful.

And that middle ground is men who believe that women are more virtuous than men, should be protected by men, and put on pedastels by men. This isn't "don't kick them in the face and stop crying occassionaly" it's "women find sexism attractive".
