Well there's a degree of 'acting white is giving in to the man, man..' - it's different from racism in seeing another race as inferior and more the idea of not accepting a white designed world. I remember sitting with a friend from Nigeria who was talking to me about dinner, where the man sits at the head of the table and the mother brings in food and everyone eats with knives and forks. This is a white picture, a white family image that everyone else suddenly buys into in a modern world. It's presented as normal, normal being a white nuclear family.

The trouble is it means education is viewed with suspicion, as buying into this world and betraying heritage. It narrows choice through peer pressure. This poor girl should have had the choice to make friends with who she pleased but alas..

You can help but you can't fight all or even most of your children's battles for them. I think there might've been low to no communication between this kid and her family or they weren't equipped to give good advice or recruit outside help because they're too busy working to pay bills and etc.

Even if she was one of the unpopular ones, there are actions that can be taken which have the net effect of people not bothering them so much anymore and not being bothered by other people either. If their school experience is bad, it is from simply not knowing how the outside world works and not understanding how various people operate in terms of socialization or are unaware or in denial of how they're failing to meet unsaid expectations on some level.
