I frankly don't know what to say. I also heard reports of Jehovah's Witnesses kingdom halls being fire bombed in Washington state. No idea who is behind it or why.

I just see this, and the Strasbourg incident as more examples of religious hate on the rise, by lay people and by the religious too. I know Olerand touched on your latter point (surveillance), which is already being done in most every Western European country that has Islamic fundamentalists (and just potentially violent zealots in general). I suppose the issue there is how does a government use it's surveillance programs and watchlists to deter these crimes in the future, and frankly, I don't even know the answer to that.

There are also socioeconomic and cultural contexts that could and should be examined when it comes to the topic of terrorism, particularly in the developed world. IE, to what extent does poverty, isolation, neighborhoods that breed antisocial behavior and cultural differences factor into potential acts of terror.
