BBC and other sources are reporting a mass shooting in the French city of Strasbourg, the seat of the European Parliament (a distinction shared with Brussels). It's currently being reported that 2 civilians have died and 11 have been left wounded. The perpetrator, who has been identified as a 29 year old Strasbourg-born suspected extremist but has not been publically named, received a gunshot wound from soldiers but has not been apprehended as of yet; the search is ongoing.
Although it's too early to draw any conclusions about the incident, it has all the hallmarks of an Islamist terror attack. Notably the shooting occurred close to a major Christmas market in Strasbourg; this is, of course, not the first time Islamists have targeted a Christmas market. That having been said, based on the information so far released by the French authorities, it isn't beyond possibility that the attack was unrelated to radical Islam- a far-right attack similar to the one carried out by Anders Bering Breivik in Norway in 2011 is also plausible.
