Honestly, Time's person of the year is a silly exercise. I'm supposed to care who the editorial board of a formerly prestigious magazine thinks is interesting and relevant?

On the other hand, it got you to post, which means you noticed it, which means Time's prestige hasn't completely disappeared.

I noticed it because it was at the top of the page. It could have been "The National Enquirer's Person of the Year" and I still would have responded.

Little upset I wasn't at least nominated.

In all seriousness, I'm generally never exceptionally interested in the Time Person of the Year, but reading their picks is always slightly interesting. I suppose I can agree with their decisions for this year, or at the very least, understand where they're coming from. The idea of "The Guardians" seems a little hastily put together, but all the people included deserve some sort of positive recognition.

So, yeah, good shit.

I hate how they never actually pick an influential single person anymore. It's almost like they're afraid to name a bad guy even though the terms of the award explicitly state that it's not supposed to be biased on whether the change was good or bad.

and yes i'm that terrible with names. i can't remember off hand the actual names of either.
but i hope, everyone will know who i'm talking about.

Rest assured anybody born after December 25, 2006 can complain about not being a TIME person of the year because they were not alive for this crowning moment in all of our lives.

Yeah, the last time they picked a single person was 2016. And 2015. And 2013. 2012, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2004, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1997...

Last time I was interested in this was when they picked The Protester as the Person of the Year. Good on TIME to recognize Maria Ressa, though. Rappler has its faults, but it definitely is in the frontline in fighting all the bullshit that comes out of Duterte's already shitty mouth. The tax evasion case is just another attempt to try and bring the news organization down. Good on them for continuing to stand up to a fascist. I'm also familiar with the two Reuters reporters. They've been imprisoned in Myanmar for over a year now, if I'm not mistaken, awaiting trial for some flimsy reason or another.

It sounds a lot less like they never pick a single person any more when they did do that only two years ago.

Doesn't matter quite how free speech originated, in its modern day context, at least in American enshrined in the 1st Amendment, it's a freedom of speech as a protection from the government. You're free to criticize the government, I don't know why you're rejecting my statement due to centuries old origin stories.
