The first time I was online was in 2010 or so, and played Club Penguin all day.

1998 or so? In the ancient days of 'dial up' (you kids might need to google it) .

Only had the one 'family' computer in the living room so porn wasn't really an option, and MMO's weren't a thing yet, so did a lot of MUDding and yahoo chat. :p

I was first introduced to computers (in general) when my father gave me some sweet games like Rome Total War to use on his laptop. I was around 7 years old or something.

After that I gained some addiction to his computer and later explored what the internet had to offer. Sooo many online games like Thing Thing 3 from CrazyMonkeyGames and Boxhead.

Too bad my addiction ended up becoming a literal obsession, leading to my internet privileges being taken away for a few years. Only until I got my own tablet device (those things are useless nowadays) did I get a newfound interest in the internet. That occurred when I was maybe in middle school.

Ah, Total War, back when it was still good, unlike now......

>When was the first time you've started using the internet?
1998. We had one of those dial-up connections that tied up the phone lines and would probably take a week to download a low-quality movie.

>What do you usually do at that period with the Internet?
There was not anything that much different I do now that I did back then. I rarely use social media, I've never blogged (tried to start one a few times, but can't get in the habit to produce anything regularly), or much of anything else that as invented or became common since then. I did research, read news, read rants, sometimes used dating or meetup group sites to make new friends or find dates, and watched videos.

>First time getting hacked / a negative comment?
Never been hacked. I get negative comments all the time. Why are these on the same line like they're almost the same thing?
Wait an hour, and it will be now again

I first used BBSes back in the 80s.

As for the actual WWW - about 1999, in the library. There, I found out about affiliate marketing, and actually made a couple of promotional sites over their computer. I managed to get a sale, with a commission of $2.

So, always being one for methodical, considered action ( ;-) ) - I quit my job the next week and devoted the next several years to that endeavor. The gamble worked, and I ended up making way more money than any stupid job ever paid me.

That took me to getting my own computer, having dial-up at 28k, getting rid of the infernal dial-up and going straight to top-tier cable, upgrading to what was then an ultimate gaming machine (my CELL PHONE is more powerful than it now...I can never get used to that) - and just recently, getting a relatively cheap computer that makes both of them look like calculators in comparison.

First time hacked: When I discovered that site where you can download games for free. I then discovered that these games always include free viruses/trojans.

First negative comment: I have no idea. I did get into plenty of flame wars on affiliate marketing forums, though! No regrets!

Also, on another note, the very first time I accessed the internet on my mobile phone... was on the Motorola Z3, c. 2008.

I was looking around the many, many features and suddenly, I found this "Web" application and I went, "Holy crap, the whole of Internet on my phone?!" I went to Google and searched for some mundane terms like "Photosynthesis" because why not.

I have no idea whether the internet access was complementary, so it could have incurred some cost. I don't know, really. All I know was at that time, I overestimated the phones too much and thought I could access everything on that little slide phone.

Being born in 1995 and in Myanmar, I had little idea of the Internet; I was only accustomed to the offline games and CD-ROMs.

That's not Internet, ya young whippersnapper. I'm not convinced that a PDP 11/70 could even network with another computer, much less a bunch of them. Didn't they mostly 'network' with 1-16 terminals? Also, while you were playing text adventures, I was writing one on an Altair 8800. Unfortunately, my writing partner and I didn't think we could make "Space Pirates" commercially viable and just gave up on it in '77 or '78.

My first networking experience was running a BBS on my ATT 6300, probably in the late 1980s. I think I had one of those newfangled 1200 baud modems that you could plug a phone cable into, which was a big step up from my original acoustic couple system. I only had one line, so the BBS was only up when I didn't need to make or receive any calls.

I do remember reading the position papers about this newfangled invention, the World Wide Web, and the concept of using dedicate browsers and some new language to tie it all together. I probably had my first chance to access it a year or two after reading that Tim Berners-Lee's report.

Heh. I was a user on the system not a sysop. The thing ran VMS, and yes we used a terminal to access it. Now I know they had a modem for it as it was a big deal when the modem was upgraded from a 110 bps to a blazing 300. Now what it connected too... I couldn't tell you, I dont remember if it was just. a remote terminal or a different system.

I can tell you, a pdp 11/70 can connect remotely as we still have one that runs traction power to the 3rd rails. Amazed the crap out of me, fills 4 cabinets. I giggled like a school girl meeting George Clooney when I first saw it. I can just sit and stare at it, the size of the boards are .... well huge. And there are pieces that are hand soldered on those boards. We are talking about replacing it, but it works, and the power guys are very resistant to change.

We had an att 6300 series at my first coding job. Basically a souped up XT clone as I remember, I think we had 512k ram in it. I dont remember what else it had

Island of Kesmai.
Crimes committed by Muslims will be proof of a pan-Islamic plot and Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand, crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of mentally ill lone wolves who do not represent their professed belief system at all.
The probability of someone secretly participating in homosexual acts is directly proportional to the frequency and loudness of their publicly professed disapproval and/or disgust for homosexuality.

Pre-WWW with bulletin boards but when possible finding timeshare and endpoint nodes. First time connected to what became the internet was in the late 70s. Some times with a Telex connection to through OSCAR with no monitor. Everything was printed out on feed paper. Other times on a zippy 300 b/s modem.

I asked some scientists/engineers for help with my homework, and played "Star Trek" and other games on the Telex print out with a bored Air Forces guys out there somewhere. I tried to play chess with but it was ate up too much feed paper. I was more into boxing with Ma Bell at the time.

First negative comment: Early 80s, evil people joining the punch tape (snail) mail share list and burning the tapes because "sharing each others code should be illegal." You know who you are Redmond
First Time Hacked: Natas variant on a 386 from an infected shared floppy destroying the hard drive and mobo about 1992. Went to Amiga until 2000s and switched to IBM compatible & GNU/Linux.
Sanhei wrote:You could give more information about yourself and your history with the internet more if you want to.

No thanks, one childhood visit from Uncle Charlie and Friends was enough. All you may want to know about exploration of the phone system and what became the WWW in the before days can be found with a good Internet search and in the files of 2200 Magazine. ::PBK::
