Tumblr Bans All Adult Content by December 17th

Postby Valehart » Mon Dec 03, 2018 1:01 pm

The Guardian
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/ ... lt-content

The Verge
https://www.theverge.com/2018/12/3/1812 ... -safe-mode

Following Apple removing Tumblr from the app store for a "child pornography incident", Tumblr decides to completely ban all NSFW adult content.

Seeing as though Tumblr is infamous for it's pornographic content, they've basically nuked most of their community in doing so. Is this type of censorship tolerable or justified? Many people believe this is due in part because of their "pornbots" not dealing with the pedophile ring properly. Many users are comparing this to MySpace and it's irrelevancy. It brings up the topic of companies censoring their platforms and a new wave of progressive-ness in social media.

Thoughts?

Why do adult websites ban porn? Facebook and instagram do the same and im just like "you may as well just open it up to all ages. Cause if this was seriously an adult only website, I think porn would be totally legal there

There are still other websites and apps that do allow NSFW content, the problem is they are quite small in comparison to the likes of Tumblr, DeviantArt (Which doesn't even allow explicit NSFW content like intercourse to my knowledge) and Pixiv. But then again I don't use Tumblr a lot, I only go on there because some of the non-NSFW art that gets posted on DeviantArt can be traced to Tumblr. I feel like this outright ban of NSFW content will force NSFW artists to leave the app for other sites to post their adult content. I feel like we are seeing a death blow to an app like Tumblr and I don't think it will survive into 2020.

Yeah I give the app about a year until it either dies, or enters irrelevancy like MySpace.

It's not "censorship". Private corporations can do anything they want with their platforms. Stop overusing the word censorship.

I don't visit Tumblr much, but from my understanding that's pretty much what the website revolves around nowadays. That and screaming feminist echo chambers.

No it's valid. Censorship being allowed to happen by law and/or one's ethics is still censorship.

It is censorship, though. The fact that they have every right to do it doesn't mean that it isn't censorship. Placing restrictions on what others can say on your platform is censorship. This isn't difficult.

Because Tumblr had a crappy system for checking for Child Porn, which allowed it to be hosted on the website, but then when that was discovered Apple got into a massive frenzy and banned it's app from all of their products, leading to Verizon's decision to ban porn on the platform.

If they don't reverse it before the ban gets enacted, I imagine the site will finally die within a few weeks, IMO.

Nice to see a porn website literally biting down on a shotgun harder than Kurt Cobain on a bender.

Nah. Pornhub knows what it is and doesn't need to pretend that it exists for any other reason than to provide fap material.

My feed is seeing some points that while people should take with a grain of salt i find myself thinking about the possiblies.
1. The only thing the flagging seem to explicitly do well is ignore art nudity.
2. The flagging system has been suggested to go off on tagging. The person who suggested ain't an expert on these things.

Doesn't Tumblr have a crapton of non-porn in it, though? I have a Tumblr account that I use rarely and my wall has a myriad of interesting things unrelated to porn. Is the porn stuff really that prevalent?

While it may not matter at this point since the perception is driving public outrage...

Well, to provide a counter anecdote: whether I intended to or not, virtually every time I've ended up on Tumblr it's been a porn tumblr.

Yes.

It has a ton of porn on there that can be found increadibly easily. Whether it be videos, gifs, art, stories, etc... you're no more than a few clicks away before stumbling upon a porn blog.

Tumblr is known for 2 things: Material for cringe comps and porn.
I guess we will never run out of cringe comp material.
