100 Years of Icelandic Sovereignty!

December 1st, 2018 marks 100 years of Icelandic sovereignty! While the Iceland we know today, The Republic of Iceland was not formed until the 1940s, December 1st 1918 was the year when Iceland officially became the Kingdom of Iceland, under the Danish Crown. This is also one of the few days parliament is open to the public. At this time, Iceland was also one of the poorest countries in Europe, along with having little to no infrastructure and many people still living like vikings. The Icelandic flag that we have today was created at this time to represent the new country, which functioned much like the commonwealth today (is de facto independent, but has the Danish monarch as head of state)How do non-Icelanders feel about this, how far do you think we’ve come in 100 years, and is the future of Iceland hopeful?

I think that we have developed more than any country in Europe in this time, we went from being extremely poor to a first world country in a hundred years. I do think the future of Iceland is hopeful, as the country is still recovering from the 2008 financial crisis, and there is still much to be done with improving the infrastructure in the rural areas.

Go Iceland! I mean, I think it's nice that another country gets to celebrate 100 years. The future is quite hopeful for Iceland. As a nation with many untapped resources, and a large amount of geothermal energy available, Iceland might just be a true resource manipulator. Like Elsa, but a country

If memory serves me:-

You had it right when dealing with thr bankers- jailing them. The consequences wern't piled on your people in the form of austerity and you recovered well. Congratulations.

I think being a small nation also benefits you. That seems to make the government act in the interest of the people rather than corporations and have more faith in the potential and versatility of its populace unlike say Britain(where people are viewed more disposably).

Eh, there were quite a few protests today calling for the resignation of a group MPs of the Progressive Party, as yesterday, they were recorded in a bar talking about wiretapping the conservatives and other creepy stuff that’s really shocking (look it up, it’s really creepy)

It was much more than that, the banks literally took the money of their customers (highly illegal) to keep themselves afloat

However, it was all handled skillfully by former Finance Minister Bjarni Benediktsson, which is why I think he won the prime minister spot in a landslide

Honestly, I'm finding it a bit hard to treat a country with a lower population than the suburbs of Warsaw seriously.

Funny thing, since the population is so low, you often personally know most celebrities/politicians/businesspeople, but yeah, Iceland is probably one of the sparsest European nations
