I'll start by stating that I am Russian, who currently in Ukraine, so call me biased if you so choose, but what would Russia gain of this? This seems oddly convenient for Poroshenko and his party with the upcoming elections and all. I do not agree with what Russia had done. And even with being in the area of all this I do not have a clear reliable source from either side on what actually had transpired.

If you look at the war without ethnicity, you see that the politicians (Putin, Poroshenko, and other) are all manipulating their people to consolidate their power. The Russians and Ukrainians have no reasonable reason to hate each other except for what the government tells them to think.

I say this from perspective of a Serbian, I believe that we have a similar situation like Ukraine in Republic of Kosovo, the government is only looking out for themselves and using people's hatred to get more power.

Politicians do this a lot, actually. Here in the US you have two sides to politics: the one that wants to get us all to hate Russia and go to war with them, and the one that wants to get us all to hate Iran and go to war with them. War is profitable and if you are the politician who is in power when a war starts, you will be reelected out of patriotic fervor.

You are correct. I think that if most people were to realize this, the current governments of the world would have a much harder time gaining any support in the future and would eventually be replaced by ones that work to improve the lives of their own people while not destroying the lives of others.

He had to let it happen to show just what damage can be done by integrating racism into politics. It was tragic, but had he just struck Hitler with lightning in 1933, another holocaust would have happened. No ethnic genocide since the holocaust has killed millions of people.

Right now it’s kinda slowed down and it’s mainly rebel doing the fighting.

We still have petty conflicts and non-based hatred that results in deaths and suffering of thousands.

These are not my personal political opinions, but
I must add that the support Russians have for Putin is due to many reasons people in the west well never understand. Russia as a whole suffered drastically after the collapse of the union. For many it was a very hard time, as people stated above Russia was not given the opportunities or supported by western countries to rebuild as was presented to let's say Latvia, Lithuania or Estonia. So when Putin took power from Yeltsin (Terrible president) whether people like to admit or not, Putin fixed a lot of issues (including ending the wars in Caucasus) and restored hope among young Russians. The man has done many wrongs no doubt, but has gained popularity among people for very good reasons also.

I don't think we ever can fully "learn that lesson". Human nature is so geared towards war and the mass extermination of those different from us that it's too ingrained to relearn.
