If you look at the war without ethnicity, you see that the politicians (Putin, Poroshenko, and other) are all manipulating their people to consolidate their power. The Russians and Ukrainians have no reasonable reason to hate each other except for what the government tells them to think.
I say this from perspective of a Serbian, I believe that we have a similar situation like Ukraine in Republic of Kosovo, the government is only looking out for themselves and using people's hatred to get more power.
Politicians do this a lot, actually. Here in the US you have two sides to politics: the one that wants to get us all to hate Russia and go to war with them, and the one that wants to get us all to hate Iran and go to war with them. War is profitable and if you are the politician who is in power when a war starts, you will be reelected out of patriotic fervor.
