There's this dumbass Francophile at work (Francophile in the American sense of the world, she thinks France is just all about wine and the Louvre) who was just oozing (literally) over Macron because she thought he was hot and the next Kennedy.

lol is she eating those words now.

This thread is veering off topic into a Macron hate thread. Personally, French politics are alien to me and I have no strong feelings for any current European leader. As I understand it the French are angry over the rise in fuel taxes (which I hear are already the most expensive in Europe, although I don't know if this true or not). Although the conflict doesn't seem to be just about taxes, this seems to be more a manifestation of something else. I don't know if Macron's tenure in office has grown enough gray hairs to justify a backlash of this magnitude. Perhaps its true that Macron is just a crappy statesman, but conflicts like these build up over years not days or even months.

I dunno, I'm not into men but I imagine that Macron is as hot now as when he was elected.

Not everyone can. Not everyone lives within walking or biking distance of work.
And France is not the problem. They already have the lowest emissions per capita of major developed countries.

And as a result their ability to make any significant reductions is limited.

Although regardless, they still should not be rioting in the streets over a policy they disagree with.
They have the ability to vote and peacefully and lawfully protest.

Humanity needs fusion to survive.

I'm fine with researching fusion.

I just don't think its funding should come at the expense of average people. France's fuel tax won't hurt the rich. It will only harm the poor.

Again as I said before, these tax increaces are indeed only hurting people.

It is indeed a very poor way to implment climet change regulations.

There are many places where public transportation is virtually nonexistent and one's commute is too far to ride a bike there.

Paris is an enormous city, and chances are that public transport appears to be unable to cover every single arrondissement effectively outside of the core.

You are right that action has to be taken to prevent disasters, but fuel taxes tend to hurt people who need to use fuel most. The best path to take is a mandate for green transport and green energy, rather than basically a use tax that just effects people negatively in the end.

Protest may be a grand understatement. I mean, French history is as erratic and prone to rioting as a Sex Pistols concert.

That's not to say that I don't find it way more endearing than I'd care to admit.

Imagine if taxes could be raised by a court as punishment for rioting.

Government to a judge: 'we're suing the populace for rioting over what they feel is high taxes, here's our proof!'
Judge: 'your argument is valid, therefore I authorize a penalty tax increase on every citizen of double the current rate.'
Government to the people: 'how do you like your tax rates now?'

The British did something like that in response to the Boston Tea Party...

It didn't end well for them.

While Macron has indeed put his foot in his mouth with this new shindig (something he's seeing the result of as we speak), I personally think that what he did is actually a pretty good idea (the whole making owning cars economically unappealing via taxes thing), you know, as long as you improve public transportation immensely and make it really easy to use.

Not talking about a "you", but a figurative you, but yeah. I don't give a fuck how lazy or stingy you are that you can't literally hire a truck, or call them to bring that to you.
The problem is, you assume I care about that. You don't want to ride a bus because it won't "stop directly in the hardware store loading bay and have a storage space for sheets of plywood, furniture, plants and whatnot"? tough. Get out and protest, get beaten with a bat and take some tear gas so you can learn better until you learn to take a bus and carry all that shit back home.
The Collective of a country's general health shouldn't just like, take a backseat because you (again, figurative) can't be arsed to hire a truck, or ask them to deliver it home.

Why should we, the collective number of people who either have a damn good purpose for a car, like cars, or both, care about the general health?

Our cars have been subject to increasingly stringent emission norms for the last few decades anyway.
