Re: Riots in France over fuel tax rises

Postby 95X » Sat Dec 08, 2018 6:44 pm

I don't claim to know how French internal politics work and generally believe that a foreign countries' internal affairs should be handled internally, but after reading two articles about the rioting extending into a fourth week I'm really beginning to think the government should consider declaring martial law.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-46492070

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-46481397
The government later scrapped the plan but the yellow vest protesters have since issued more than 40 demands to government, including a minimum pension and widespread changes to the tax system.

Again, the government should have the right to say "no", and if people don't like it they should vote for someone else next time. If they did vote for someone else and that candidate lost, they need to uphold and serve the election results.

Pope Joan wrote:

Government to a judge: 'we're suing the populace for rioting over what they feel is high taxes, here's our proof!'
Judge: 'your argument is valid, therefore I authorize a penalty tax increase on every citizen of double the current rate.'
Government to the people: 'how do you like your tax rates now?'

For the love of heaven, please speak softly!
They may be listening

That's exactly why I mentioned it, just in case any government is reading this thread for ideas I think it would be a good bargaining chip so the entire populace could go about their lives while thinking of voting for someone else next time.

So in reality, the fuel tax was merely the catalyst, the straw that broke the camel's back...

Those protests seem to be the result of the rising discontent of the French people, and now they're goddamn furious.

This is France we are talking about if they declare martial law the yellow Jackets are likely to storm the Bastille and declare a 6th Republic

^ the unique thing france must not do, and you can see it from abroad easely, is to declare that noisy and badly assembled, sort of a martial law.

the demostration's agenda (of the larger part of it) is then not to meet the claims of the bargains party, as the 'wall street journal' (and the thread's post) falsely claimed instead.

Hot take: people are protesting, they might be angry. You truly are uncovering untapped layers here.

Yes, France has a lot of issues, this is not just about the gas tax.
France also has very high unemployment and a high cost of living.

And many people seem to feel the government does not care about them and is actively harming them.

If only people’s feelings were aligned with reality.

The encouraging thing is that some sources suggest that most of the recent protestors (this weekend) were Antifa and Proud Boy types rather than genuine rural yellow vests, suggesting that they’re not really as angry as they seem to be now that Macron backtracked.

What makes you think those in government do care?
And if they do but fail to communicate it properly then that is a failure on their part.

Their policies? To be honest we’ll probably have to get used to stuff like this as our populations get older and global warming and shit make things even worse.

It is truly disappointing that so many young people these days are hostile to the church and support anti-clerical parties. :(

Their policies? You mean the ones they impose on others without following themselves?
You mean the policies that punish the defrauded victims of the diesel scandal and not the perpetrators? (Not surprisingly considering the same politicians allowed the scandal to happen and many were involved in it?)

You mean taxing the average worker’s diesel while flying private jets?
You mean forcing others to cut emissions while continuing to produce absurd amounts on their own?

Their policies seem to indicate they care about preserving their own position, regardless to the costs of those outside the ruling class.

If actually protecting the environment and economy was the objective there would be better ways to do so.

And if you are going to demand the public make sacrifices, unless you are willing to make the same sacrifices you will lose all credibility.
Which is the fundamental problem here.

Until the political elite understand the concepts of leading by example, servant leadership and self-sacrifice this situation is just going to get worse.

Gauche caviar are the problem, not the solution.

In all honesty, they've had an average of One Republic per 45 years. The Fifth Republic is due for a regime change any time now.

2nd hardly count since it was made into a proto-consulat by Napoléon III from the get-go while the 4th was literally just a rebranding of the 3rd.
The 5th was more or less the officialisation of a soft (and democratic) military coup that enshrined the centralisation of power it accomplished but even so it really just was a grandiloquent name for what was a mere constitution change.
