Government to a judge: 'we're suing the populace for rioting over what they feel is high taxes, here's our proof!'
Judge: 'your argument is valid, therefore I authorize a penalty tax increase on every citizen of double the current rate.'
Government to the people: 'how do you like your tax rates now?'

Yes, France has a lot of issues, this is not just about the gas tax.
France also has very high unemployment and a high cost of living.
And many people seem to feel the government does not care about them and is actively harming them.

Their policies? To be honest we’ll probably have to get used to stuff like this as our populations get older and global warming and shit make things even worse.

Virtually all of their supporters are the religious elderly. That's their entire catchment area. They don't succeed with anyone else. There's such a big gap between irreligious and religious people in support for LR they have no chance of closing it, especially with the youth, a demographic within which LR is sixth in the country for support.
