I have to agree. While I think the tax was a bad idea to start with (punishing victims of fraud instead of the fraudsters essentially) if you concede to violence, you just encourage more.

If people think rioting is more effective than voting, you have a big problem.

I mean, if the French want their future policies to be decided through intifadas throughout Paris then that's their choice. Reminder that Arabs and Africans are far better at rioting than the natives, though, obviously.

I think the French of all people would be quite insulted you called their rioting sub par.

So did he just delay the implementation of the fuel tax? Not good. Keep rioting.

Surely a delay in rioting would be the proper response.

This revolt is so comically French.

An out of touch elitist with his head up his own ass squaring off against the backwards country peasants. How long before the guillotines come out?

Victory!

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-46437904

Fuel tax rises which have led to weeks of violent protests in France have now been postponed for six months. The move was announced in a televised address by PM Edouard Philippe, who said anyone would have "to be deaf or blind" not to hear or see the anger. The protests have hit major cities, causing damage and disruption over the past three weekends. The "gilets jaunes" (yellow vest) protests have now grown to reflect more widespread anger at the government.

So, next riot in six months, mon ami?

Good for them. Putting off the tax for six months is the government simply hoping the masses will forget and move on. I hope the protest is peaceful but demonstrates that they won't be deceived.

Gendarmie in the streets this weekend. Also a possible vote of no-confidence brewing in the National Assembly.

I hope they keep on marching until Macron is out, since he's sitting at a pretty untenable position anyways. The removal of the fuel tax is clearly little more than a desire for a Christmas truce (which we now see they won't get).

Postponement is a way of the government backing down while saving face, because if they said that they were taking the fuel tax off the table, that would be admitting that people were successful in getting their way by rioting. And that's not something a government wants to admit.

Now that the police may go on strike, the french may legit be having another revolution.

You're wrong to believe there's no way the french would overthrow another leader violently or kill him. It's happened before

When a lader has an approval rating of 23% and the police say "we're joining the protesters," It usually isn't long before that leader resigns or is executed. Sixth Republic here we come
