What did the Nazis do for us?

was going to call this thread -What did the Romans Nazis do for us? - but the coding doesn't permit it.

I channel hopped onto a documentary on Thalidomide and it was developed by scientists from the Nazi era(not surprising considering the timeframe) - at lest one worked in the regime/death camps.

This triggered this thread as I think it might make an interesting discussion. If you wanted you could stretch back to the 1st World War as Hitler wouldn't have taken over a party who's politics weren't anything like they turned into.

Scientific development was accelerated in jet engines and aircraft - Heinkel He 178
rocketry-satellites, man on the moon, hubble
medicine/chemistry- (unbethical)eugenic studies expanded knowledge
radar
(drumroll) computing

Socially- The EU, Nato, the creation of Israel(and ongoing problems), motorways, the modern olympics, expansion of communism, welfare state in uk

There must be more, but hopefully this provides something to get your teeth into.

Heidegger was arguably the greatest philosopher of the 20th Century, and I would say Carl Schmitt was the greatest political theorist of that Century.

But anyway, even supposing the Nazis didn't come to power, the Konservative Revolution meant probably some other group intent on revenge on France would regardless, and there would therefore still be WWII.

I suppose there is Fanta - the orange drink with the bitter aftertaste of totalitarianism.

Showed us the Italians are not to be trusted. :p

Oh they also did the equivalent of throwing a giant handgrenade on Europe. Mostly blasting themselves and some neighbours. Ending up weaker as a result.

Oh Germany, will you ever stop destroying Europe?

The Nazis did the exact same thing the Germans have always done.

Nothing suspicious at all about a freshly created account praising Nazis.

They took contemporary continental european values to their inevitable conclusion and revealed that we didn't want to go through with it. When defeated in the first war and wracked by recession they did what people tend to do, conclude that they need to double down and do the same thing, but harder this time.

Also created a really annoying accusation used by a lot of people for anyone they disagree with.

Contemporary European values were in fact the rotting of the west, so going through that was understandably objectionable. Unfortunately Nazism, as Heidegger notes, became the very embodiment of the evil decomposing us.

I'd say they destroyed Europe, but in the context of German foreign affairs that is not at all unusual.

On the positive side, they gave us motorways, and that's probably one of the greatest inventions ever. Animal rights and environmental policies are also good, but since some morons take it too far perhaps there's an aura of regret they began the trend.

Well, they gave us an entire branch of black comedy. So there’s that.

They provided Britain (and almost all of the rest of Europe) with a fight that we can, collectively, all be extremely proud of having fought. Britain has fought many selfish or pointless wars for little reason but going against the Nazis? That one is one to forever be proud of having done.

The fighting also, finally and firmly made the case for international institutions like the United Nations and the European Union, a case for actual enforcement of the rules of war, a codifying of what human rights are, a clear image of what democracy really stands for and it killed the case of racism for a generation.

So we can thank them for forcing us to think about why we needed to fight against such evil.

You've got people that would perform some mental gymnastics to thank their high school bully.

Which in part may explain why they got bullied.

positive, negative, smegative- mention of Thalidomide in th op is hardly positive- although that said it might have some use against cancer.

The trouble in the middle east is hardly positive.

the modernisation of the Olympics- positive.

because of enigma - the development of computing and the web- largely positive

the develop in aeronautics and rocketry- both positive

Mengele's experiments etc - although despicable but was the basis for future developments.

It's what you want and others to make of it.
