As I understand it, athlete's foot has more to do with a foot being kept in damp conditions for a prolonged period of time. Like in the sweat-soaked sock of an athlete.

Wiki's article says, "Historically it is believed to have been a rare condition, that became more frequent in the 1900s due to the greater use of shoes, health clubs, war, and travel." The mind boggles ... shoes, health clubs, war, and travel.

Because its unhygienic?

Yall, feet are nasty. They don't just collect the same amount of bacteria as shoes, they provide a nice warm wet breeding ground for them, as well as potentially providing a conduit for anything the person has to be spread around them.

Is this true considering how often most people shower compared to throughly wash their shoes with soap?

I know, it was just the juxtaposition of those terms in relation to athlete's foot.

I think you're thinking of Trench Foot. Athlete's Foot is passed along by fungi that are absorbed and dispersed from the sole of the foot.

You know what everyone does that spreads way more germs than bare feet or anything else that people get freaked out about? Phones. You use your phone and then you touch your face. Almost everyone does it. Almost everyone does it because we're all on our phones all day, way too often that we're washing our hands after every time we touch our phones, and everyone unconsciously will touch their face and transfer all those germs from their hand to their face.

I don't know, I would like to see some scientific proof that going barefoot presents a particularly greater hazard than most of the other things we do that we don't even think about. How about children? Bringing children into places? There's a reason adults without children never get pink eye. I have never seen anyone who isn't a parent, babysitter, or teacher get pink eye.

I'm not necessarily saying that we have to start washing our hands every single time we touch our phones or stop procreating altogether, I'm just making the point that people get hung up on certain potential health hazards while ignoring greater ones.

According to the Mayo Clinic:
"It commonly occurs in people whose feet have become very sweaty while confined within tightfitting shoes."

Both those conditions are caused by confining feet to moist warm conditions for long periods without proper drying and air flow ie it’s wearing shoes that allow the fungi to thrive - getting sunlight via going barefoot is the remedy

From reading your post (I'm going the information you've given), I'm getting the impression that the school's policy did not discriminate against anyone (on the basis of race, colour, religion, gender, gender expression, age, national origin, disability, or sexual orientation). The policy applies to everyone: no shirt, no shoes, no service

Why should the lad be given special exemption/immunity because of his religion? Everyone else was not given special exemption to do as they like (i.e. all cafetaria users must follow the policy equally). It's true that we should accommodate religious diversity (whether you are Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, etc.), but I feel that we should not make special exemption for people when the rules have been set in stone - especially when the rules are not discriminatory, i.e. everyone should follow the rules (or will be treated the same) no matter their cultural or religious background

I feel in this case it is this person who's being discriminatory and he was being a bit selfish - why should he be given special treatment because of his religion over other people/users in the cafeteria? Why should he feel special to feel that he can just not follow the rules of the cafetaria when everyone else must follow it?

I don't know. I'm usually for religious diversity (I think they're good when applied with common sense) but in this case I must vote no. The lad is being a bit selfish/arrogant here by demanding that he be given special treatment not given to others just because of his religion

That's completely unsanitary and they were in the right to remove him.

We shouldn't bend over backwards to accommodate religious nonsense. This is like Muslims going to restaurants and then becoming enraged when they find pork on the menu.

Unless he is using his bare feet to eat food or is placing them on the table or some shit, what he did was no less unsanitary than if he was wearing saddles or shoes.

Also, this is a school cafeteria, not some restaurant.

Exposing your feet fungus to others is bad.

And I'm aware it's a school cafeteria. As I said, I don't think public spaces should have to accommodate the idiot religious beliefs of a few people.
