Flickr Changes

Postby Xerographica » Tue Nov 06, 2018 5:26 pm

Flickr's new owners are planning to make some drastic changes. One change is that they are limiting free accounts to only 1000 photos. Previously the limit was 1TB of storage.

Are any of you on Flickr? If so, what are your thoughts on the changes? Also please link to your page so that we can check out your photos.

I emailed my thoughts to Flickr...

How many photos do you think are going to be deleted from Flickr as a result of the changes? I'm pretty sure that countless photos will be deleted and this will severely diminish Flickr's value.

One of the perks that you are giving to pros is increased exposure. What you should do is allow everybody to buy increased exposure for specific photos. Just create a prominent page on Flickr called "treasure map" where people can see photos sorted by crowdfunding. The crowd will use their dollars to elevate the treasure. Cream will quickly rise to the top.

On Facebook it is relatively easy to "boost" a post. You simply pay for a post to be seen by more people. This is obviously a good idea... but for some reason you can't boost other people's posts.

Here's a photo that I really like...

https://www.flickr.com/photos/72640415@N06/7780297924/

Since I really like this photo, I really want more people to see it. Right now it's pretty easy to share it on Facebook... and then I can boost the post for even more people to see it. But if I do so then Facebook gets the money. I would prefer if Flickr gets the money instead.

Facebook allows for individual funding to provide more exposure for posts. You can improve on this idea by allowing for crowd funding to provide more exposure for photos.

Does this make sense? If you implement this suggestion then you will generate more than enough revenue and there will be no need to limit free accounts to only 1000 photos.

So file size varies and all, but I looked at one of my printscreens to see how much data that was, saved in PNG format.

It's about 3/4 of a megabyte.

Multiply that but a thousand, and you get a little shy of 3/4 of a gigabyte (1024 multiplier and all).

That's a lot less data than 1tb.

I am still smarting from the days Kodakgallery just deleted everyone's photos as they went to a paid service.. I used to create lovely storylines through my photos that my friends and family really enjoyed, and then they were just gone.

Not to dissimilar to photobucket, which I used solely for NS but it's such an incredible jumble of pop-up advertising now that I my eyes can't handle it anymore, so I don't post amusing images anymore on NS.

Mostly I use Instagram these days - I'd be happy to pay a subscription fee to a photo hosting site but to be honest I don't take photos with a camera anymore.

Is Flickr the one for gay hook-ups, the one for straight hook-ups, the Chinese Twitter knockoff, or something else?

JK, I know what Flickr is. But I use tinypic, it's the most straightforward and easy. Photobucket used to be nice but not anymore.

It's unfortunate, but not entirely unreasonable.
At least they didn't pull a photobucket and shit the bed completely.

Imgur works well enough for me.

Photobucket can still be used for free, but they made the login interface in such a way that it's hard to tell.

Unfortunate. I use Flickr frequently for my own photos, and also for NS itself when it comes to resizing.

Flickr's killer share feature is being able to resize photos, which Imgur lacks (you can only edit the photo one-time and it's sort of permanent).

You can do the same in good ol' offline MS Paint.

tbf that's normal when the company buying doesn't have the money to operate the infrastructure needed for it.

You have to realize Flickr, as part of Yahoo, had nigh unlimited resources. Buuuuuuut not everyone used it, it's a minority website and for the most part I'd think Flickr was being run at a loss from Yahoo.
