I don't think it's a woman's approval they're concerned about. I think its closer to that society has given them the message that they, as "nice guys", are entitled to women without any extra input on their part.

In any case, it comes from the constant rhetoric of needing a woman to be worthwhile. We can see this in society even - the wage gap between married and single men is huge. As soon as you're married, society sees you as more worthwhile and starts treating you accordingly. You can see this in rhetoric referring to them derogatorily as "virgins" and "neckbeards" and "living in momma's basement" and "they just need to get laid". It's a constant reinforcement that they're worthless because a woman hasn't vouched for them.
