Ironically enough, many coups in history were launched by the political equivalent of "a couple of drinking buddies" (Carnation Revolution and the overthrow of the Brazilian Empire come to mind) and succeeded, so I really wouldn't be too dismissive of its power as a tool of national rebirth.
