Horseshoe Theory is crap and doesn't even make sense, there are several dimensions to ideology. Even if they want to argue that Pinochet and Stalin are basically the same, what about radical anti-authoritarianism? How exactly does an anarchist horseshoe into a Stalinist or a nazi?

If an "extreme" ideology is to be condemned, there should be substantial arguments of the merit of the ideology, condemning an ideology just for being extreme is not an argument. Liberal democracy is extreme in North Korea. Secularism is extreme in Saudi Arabia.

What I also find annoying about centrism is that it concedes that the status quo is basically fine. "Maybe the Democrats are wrong about x and the Republicans go too far on y, but our system works and the government generally tries to do the right thing."
