I wear Mizzou Tigers apparel (University of Missouri) often in fall and winter, this despite not having attended uni there. When in MI, I wore MSU Spartans jackets. I don't really see an issue with it. They were/are comfy and warm jackets. I've never gotten any hate from it.

When I was walking around Boston no one asked me about the Harvard hat nor did anyone on the train ride home

I don't think many people care, although I concede that probably some do. I just never had any issues. Even while visiting Lawrence KS, with a university with quite the rivalry with Mizzou, no one batted an eyelash at me wearing the Mizzou hoodie. In fact, I was welcomed quite nicely and even made some friends.

I proudly wear my "University of American Samoa" hat every day, and that's my God-given right as an American.

Of course it is. Just like it's ok to wear apparel for a team you didn't play for.

No. Since it's doubly illegal, you will be hanged from the neck until dead, then your dead body will face a firing squad.

If somebody accepts your harvard cap as valid credentials then that says more about them than it does about you.

Yeah it's a souvenir of a trip and it's a famous landmark in that area so it's no different to wearing an Eiffel tower t-shirt and not having worked at the Eiffel tower.
If you were to buy it online and not go to Boston or have any connection to Boston then I'd find that weird. But still a personal choice issue.
Especially when it comes to the sort of Ivy League/Oxbridge type unis that hardly anyone gets into and everyone's heard of.

No, it's not. If it were so, the school wouldn't sell that apparel to the public.

People in Boston are used to seeing Harvard stuff because it is all over the city. So yeah, nobody cares when they see it.

I have heard the argument made its inappropriate to wear appeal from a school you didn't go to as it somehow is a insult to those who actually attended and is pretentious. I have also heard its duping people into thinking you are attending or did attend.

I don't see the issue with it though it might depend on the school. Harvard or Stanford is a world renowned institution held in high esteem the world over. It shows you support the university as an institution. I don't think its duping anyone.

What is your opinion NSG?

I don't know about America, they can be a little more boastful, or prideful if that's a better word, but in the UK if you went to Cambridge or Oxford, once you left you'd probably never wear apparel outside again - so anyone wearing an Oxford or Cambridge t-shirt probably never went to those places.

I would say its acceptable, but not so for anything that'd identify someone as an alumnus if there is such a thing, such as those exclusive pins that're limited to those in an honors club that has actual prestige or influence. Civilians can wear military clothing just fine, but can't or shouldn't wear any actual medals or rank/unit insignia unless that is their real history.

What matters is that no confusion arises between mere admirers and those who actually went if they're gathering for a meeting or event.
