If I were advertising, I’d demand payment

Free advertising is something companies would kill for.

Is it also misleading people to wear a nasa apparel such as a nasa cap or jacket? I don’t work for nasa and likely never will but I am hugely interested in the cosmos and astrophysics.

Plus FYI John Deere is largest agriculture machinery company in the world so I find it very difficult to fathom you have never heard of them.

i've never paid much attention to the company names of farms or agriculture equipment firms... I've always assumed its this big somewhat monolithic government-run/regulated thing with a lot of protectionism (bordering on socialism)... it never occurred to me that they might have widely recognisable names

again, I thank you for bringing my attention this name, I will recognise it NOW

...

I would say, if you don't work for NASA and don't have friends/family in NASA and you wear a NASA cap and I see you... my first instinct would certainly be:

"Oh they probably work for NASA or have some sort of personal connection to it"

It would mislead me. But I'm not seeing the harm so no it should be allowed... but its just... causing pointless confusion.

Is this truly the first time you;'ve ever heard of John Deere?

How is it misleading or causing pointless confusion? NASA apparel is sold at museums and in retail stores.

I would not think they work for NASA. My assumption would be they are a fan of astronomy.

In addition I would never try and mislead people that I went to Harvard with the cap I bought. I like the school and support it as institution and what it stands for.

I don't think wearing apparel of a prestigious university is the scholarly form of "stolen valor" or anything :p , it's just something people do.

Okay.

But has anyone ever expressed a bit of (even casual) confusion about why you wear the Harvard cap?

I just bought it last weekend and wore it after I left the store in Boston and on the train home. No one showed even the slightest amount of confusion or even asked me about it.

It should be acceptable to wear something from a university you want to attend and I will defend my Stanford shirt. It's just something people do.

Hmmmm... okay...

well I mean, if you want to do it I guess...

Its just not something I would personally do (because I would personally dread having to explain it every time or else risk misleading people); I also resent doing free advertising for an already prestigious and powerful university (if I'm doing that, I want to be paid).

But its not something I would say, SHOULDN'T be allowed per say (that we need to sanction). So I guess you can do as you want? I just personally wouldn't and if someone did, I would be confused as to why (and probably until they revealed, I would be misled a bit).

Again how am I misleading anyone? No one when I was walking in Boston asked me "Did you go to Harvard?" and no one on a sold out train asked me either.

You clearly don't understanding advertising. Even though I have never owned a John Deere product and its unlikely I will I still like the company and their products. When I bought the Deere hat part of the profit went to the company.

Companies would kill for free advertising. Money isnt everything

how do you know they didn't ask because they've already assumed?

If I saw you I wouldn't come up to you and ask either. I'd have assumed but I don't talk to strangers.

Its not so much the effect of the advertising (which might be inconsequential from a single additional person wearing the brand/name)... its much more that on principle, if I'm doing some form of advertising and I have no reason to be doing so... then I would like payment. You know?

Why would I care what people assume and don't verbalize?

And when I have worn the NASA jacket people have asked me were i got it. They didn't ask if I worked for NASA.

did these people know your occupation beforehand?

I mean... you don't have to care what people assume and don't verbalise; I (personally do) and am concerned about potentially misleading.

Why is my occupation important?

I still fail to see how a Harvard or John Deere cap or a Nasa jacket is misleading people.

Misleading (probably unintentional) happens when someone assumes X but in fact Y is true and they only thought X because of something you did/wore/said.

I don't know how to answer the first question. I mean, its as important as anything else?

I don't understand why you asking if people knew my occupation before asking me about the NASA bomber. They didn't ask if I worked for NASA they wanted to know where I got it.
