Sorry, but I don't deal in ahistorical bullshit. Your beloved De Gaulle and Churchill sat on their asses appeasing Hitler while leftists fought Nazis in the streets of Germany and then fought them again all across Spain. :^)

I mean, this is just a dumb argument, neither of them were in positions to influence Anglo-French policy before the war started. And if we want to get really into the nitty-gritty, your beloved comrades fucking lost, in no small part because they were being supported by Stalinist Russia, which I think as regimes go is as close to a perfect moral vacuum as you can come.

Took FDR and solid, capitalist, democratic American can-do to fix Europe's mess (as usual).

I think he means de Gaulle and Roosevelt which were rather authoritarian in their measures (Roosevelt himself skipping over the senate and congress on multiple occasions and De Gaulle being an "apprentice dictator").

I mean, total war kinda calls for authoritarian measures.

Also, y'know, the whole Japanese internment thing.

Yeah, that was a pretty catastrophically huge and shameful fuck-up. But at least we weren't gassing them or working them to death as our German and Russian friends might've done, so I think America still emerges slightly ahead in the moral calculus here.

With 99% of the votes counted, Bol. got 55.2% of the vote. Had. got 44.8%.

A local radio station had some news on this. They had part of Bol. victory speech. And he does sound like a normal politician. Wanting to get Brazil closer to the first class nations of the world. To work for all Brazilians and such. Nothing he said sounded subversive. Time will tell.

Cue our rightist friends responding "well Duterte's drug war has ONLY killed tens of thousands!!" :p

State's "official count" pegs the number at around 5,000 killed in "legitimate police action." More believable non-state sanctioned counts pegs the number at upwards of 24,000, with the possibility of reaching upwards of 35,000 by mid 2019. Duterte and Bolsonaro really really just look like carbon copies of each other, except one of them got an upgrade because it looks like his killings are going to be supported not just by the police but by the military as well.

With Bolsonaro’s victory it is time to say farewell to democracy in Brazil and even more sadly the Amazon rainforest. This will be a day remembered for generations to come. That’s if there even is a world for our children to inherit.

1. Don't you need to submit to the authority of the state to let the state control everything? Authoritarianism is a prerequisite to totalitarianism.

2. Shame that all fascist movements to this day have been misogynistic.

Authoritarianism and Totalitarianism compliment each other perfectly, but neither is necessary for the other to be attained. Totalitarianism demands obedience, whereas Authoritarianism doesn't have to. Get it?

All of them have been misogynistic? I find that hard to believe. The Fascists I've conversed with seem to suggest that while they prefer gender roles they do not necessarily wish to enforce them. Admittedly you could say that's still fairly misogynistic, but I've never met a Fascists who thought women should be submissive to men or be treated as objects/broodmares.

AH, well. Democracy's died in Latin America before, it always bounces back. Besides, the Social Liberals are second behind the PT in the Chamber and tied for 10th place in the Senate, so he'll still need a hefty coalition to get things done.
