The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion … but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact; non-Westerners never do.

The most fundamental problem of politics is not the control of wickedness but the limitation of righteousness.

Get a humidifier. Home heating in the winter dries out the air in the house and low humidity is a prime cause of nosebleeds, right up there with jamming a finger up there so you can breathe. Seriously, a humidifier should help.

I have a humidifier, just purchased on 4 January 2018, and only a month and a half later (23 February 2018) I had a good 40-minute nosebleed; I had been planning to watch an episode of Untold Stories of the ER at 20:00 but around 19:58 it started gushing, and when it was all said and done I had been sitting on the bathroom floor, two Kleenexes pinched over my nose, uncomfortable for two thirds of the length of the show. Three days later I had another bad one starting at 6:05, which spells trouble considering I leave for work at 6:35, at which time it was still bleeding moderately. I just took a portion of a Kleenex and jammed it up the offending nostril, running into the bathroom immediately upon getting to work and cleaning up then.

On 6 December 2017 I woke up at around 0:40 to the start of a nosebleed; having the lights off at the time I couldn't exactly see what was going on, so there ended up being nice red spots all over my bedroom floor, which is carpet no less. My dad was real happy when I told him what had happened, meaning he had to come over and irrigate the entire floor with several gallons of water, and the floor was soggy for a couple of days afterward. These are just a couple of my worst nosebleed stories; I've been getting them since childhood, though the 2017-2018 season was the worst. Some triggers I've found:

  • Dry or rapidly changing weather
  • Picking or blowing my nose (those activities tend to be risky, being that you never know when it's just going to start gushing)
  • Being stressed out
  • Having already had one or two earlier in the day

In the lower-stress, warmer summer months, I have relatively few nosebleeds; I may get one a month or even less frequently than that. I always hate when people (most commonly the same middle-aged, female, "know it all" archetype) always parrot the "tilt your head back" line and try to tell me how to deal with nosebleeds, considering I've probably had over a thousand in my life and their advice is typically patently incorrect anyway. If your nose is bleeding, you should tilt your head forward so the blood can evacuate the body as opposed to running down your throat and into your digestive tract. Do these people really want me to hurl?
