Vomelet MREs have quite the tendency to disorient you.

I've read reports of seasoned hikers and climbers getting disoriented by the elements and dying. I know soldiers have a lot of training but snow can truly play havoc with your senses so that's how, probably, he became lost.

He could have become disoriented.

After re-reading the news article, apparently, the only equipment he had was the clothes on his back (a t-shirt and jeans) and not even a tent designed for snow. Which makes me change my position on the Canadian military- jeez, you breed them tough! (Although, granted, the snow storm was unexepected, and out of season) He wasn't even a full time soldier, just a reservist, and he was Toronto (see my earlier comments about Ontario's mountains). 5 years later, and the poor bloke was still missing in April. Lesson is, don't trust your memory...

As much fun as hiking across the top of your head may or may not be, I was referring to my favorite type of mountain to hike across.

Balds don't grow trees on a wide berth of area around the peak. There are many mountains here that have peaks above the tree line but aren't balds.

Y'know, the more you talk about hiking, the more I am starting to realize I:

A. Miss going camping and strolling through the Canadian Shield
B. Need a friend or partner to do all this freedom shit with me.

I mean, I like McDonald's. Not something you'd eat daily, but it's good to have some Macca's during the night.

I'm shooting for Summer 2021 (more like late March start aiming for a late September finish) unless something changes.

Summer 2021?

God knows what I'll be doing by then, but chances are that I'll have my own apartment.

Summer 2020 at the earliest, though waiting an extra year gives me time for shorter backpacking trips and more time to accumulate gear.

Ugh, I wish I could join ya, but two years of preparation while I am still greatly aiding my parents solve their financial woes is so little time...

Technically you are indeed correct, but somebody to talk to casually and confide to when doing activities is nice.

Not always. Cooperation with others can open up other possibilities in life that would be unavailable otherwise, due to lack of individual ability/economic status/social status etc.
