I don't think you'll make a very good warehouse. Pockets are fine, but there's only so much a guy can store internally.

Sheep are better to store things in.

We have plenty of RAM.

It beggars belief that with a country with so many immigrants as you do, you don't go pick off complete sentences stuffed with foreign languages. Is it a matter of geography, of English being the lingua franca, or just a plain sense of cultural superiority (not criticising here btw)?

I am so trilingual that I speak German when in Romania, rather than switching to English.

I was told the average Netherlander's a quadrilingual.

Bad Dutchling, bad sheep !

Short Answer: Depends.

In the early days of immigration people who didn't speak English were discouraged from speaking their native language and teaching their kids their natives languages, so they'd have an easier time fitting in and integrating into US society. (The former reason has mostly died off, but the second reason has evolved into immigrant refusing to teach their kids languages other than English for multiple reasons (Fear that they won't integrate properly and be made fun of, belief in the idiotic idea that learning 2 languages at once will destroy their child's ability to speak any languages and make their children dumb, etc...))

Another reason would be that, quite frankly, people aren't interested in learning languages other than their native language (In this case, English, but the same can be said for Japanese, Korean, Arabic, etc...). North America only has 3 (And that's being generous) major languages spoken on it (For reference, the US and Canada combined are about the same size if not bigger than Europe). Quite frankly, you don't really need to speak another language other than English or Spanish here, and you most likely won't get practice with another language either, so what's the point?

Then there's the belief that English should be the only language spoken here and anyone who doesn't conform can get out. Then you have immmigrants who don't really care about the main native population and don't want to intergrate or even make friends or socialize with people outside their little ethnic bubbles (There are a lot of Chinatowns, Little Italies, etc... here, and some are so separated from general society it doesn't even feel like you're in Canada, America, Mexico, etc...)

Relating to the second reason, language programs here also suck. Most are very slow and noneffective. Add on the before mentioned fact that meeting people who want to speak their native language to you is damn near impossible, and yeah, not a good learning environment. Also, if Americans/English speaking Canadians go abroad to say... Europe for example. Almost no one's going to talk to them in their native language or even talk to them at all. English is the Lingua Franca, so most people just default to English if you try to talk to them in order to save time (Or don't talk at all because they don't understand English).

I could go on and on and on there are so many reasons, but those are just a few reasons as to why language accusition is so difficult here (I'm sure I missed a few and maybe even gave you unrelated answers, but this topic tends to be a tad bit complicated). Same thing goes for the rest of North and South America.

Geography mostly, traveling to an from other countries is expensive in the US. Anything but Mexico and Canada is an plane ride away. When I went to Europe it was still fairly easy to get around as a decent portion of western Europeans speak English, so there really isnt the need to learn, or exposure to, other languages that say Europeans have.
