I don't understand, but it's witchcraft anyways. Why do people hate JK Rowling so much?

In terms of the wizarding world? She can't stop retroactively retconning and adding things to it - much to the dismay of the continuity because the canon she retcons and adds at random wim often leaves canon with contradictions and plot holes.

In term of reality? She's got shit political opinions, not that anybody wants to hear them anyway, but she often makes them known. They were standard anti Trump things at first but lately she's been attacking Jeremy Corbyn and supporting Brexit and Theresa May hardcore, so who knows what's happening with Rowling anymore.

It seems that a lot of authors do grow to hate their own creation.

Agatha Christie could never stand Poirot, apparently. She always wanted to kill him off, but he was too popular.

I can see getting tired of everyone wanting you to keep writing for the same series.

My dad is a writer, and he's never had anything anywhere near Harry Potter levels of popularity, but he still got a little annoyed when he was doing crowd-funded online serials and a lot of his fans turned out to only be interested in one particular series. If he tried to write other stuff he got way less money, and fans would ask him when he was going to write more of their favorite series.

I can imagine that would be annoying.

I stopped paying attention after the original 7 books. I enjoyed reading those when they came out, and I saw the first couple of movies, but I don't need to obsess over everything that comes out just because it is Harry Potter-related.

The ones I'm talking about are the original Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Quidditch Through the Ages, and the Tales of Beedle the Bard. There's another, I think, but those 3 are all that I actually read.

I was never really into Harry Potter -- do I have to turn in my TETizen badge as I leave? -- I read a couple of the books and saw the first film. I have also seen the first Fantastic Beasts film (it was on TV and I was bored).

But it's not really my thing.

What I've seen of her later work (like the best unmentioned "Casual Vacancy", I feel JK Rowling's become more of a brand than an author, TBH.

"Death of the Author" is the sentiment that whatever the author has written in the text - that's it. That's all there is. Any kind of worldbuilding outside of that does not exist and is not the ownership of the original author. Basically the opposite of authorial intent. What JK Rowling has done is taken all the gaps in our Harry Potter knowledge and fills them in with whatever is going to keep her relevant and keep her milking that billion-dollar cash cow. So, the original seven books (plus the three or so other books that expanded a bit on the HP Lore) and eight movies? Great. Very great. All that itty bitty trivia about this or that apparently being canon? Yeah fuck that.

I think she thinks her immense love of adding random tidbits is setting her up as a modern Tolkien. The problem there being that Tolkien (1) wrote down literally everything, perfecting this wonderfully amazing world, the lore, the history, the races, the languages - everything and (2) she's a joke for thinking that.

Is it possible that she's been inspired into doing the things she does by Tolkien's worldbuilding? Absolutely. Has she entirely missed the mark? Absolutely.

Again, I think she just didn't know how the bathroom worked before modern plumbing and assumed everyone shat on the floor, the magical part was it vanishing.

I believe I made my first nation on this site around that same time, now that I think about it. 2004-2005, something like that. I guess a good deal of current NSers weren't even born at the time.
