Where is the option for not having friends?
(Literally the only people I live around are either really old or really young, and a young adult hanging around either sounds like a massive red flag.)Fahran wrote:Well, there was a rather lewd remark made about Amaterasu-no-mikoto earlier, but, as a rule, it's going to be a lot harder for a western audience to mock and demean deities and traditions with which they possess minimal familiarity. I want to say that the common mockery of the Buddha that I hear is about the more full-bodied statuettes you sometimes see as a representation of bliss - I believe that's the right word. Beyond that, I normally don't have much of an issue with jokes. But I tend to moderate myself when I know it won't be seen as funny by others, will upset someone, or is trite and unoriginal.
The only thing that really offends me is smug ignorance. Someone naming a cafe the Buddha Bar or whatever isn't on my list of things to become peeved about, and the sutras say we shouldn't become angry or hostile when relics are desecrated or destroyed. But someone trying to lecture me about how Buddhism is actually a rad religion which has no deities, punishment, or faith, that does wear down my patience over time.
As a rule, I wouldn't recommend mocking esoteric deities. Not because I'm offended, but because I believe they're real personalities who can kill or harm you if they're angered. In some parts of Japan, people are genuinely terrified about evoking the wrath of deities like Shōten or Inari and I know of at least a couple of deaths in the 1900's that were attributed to those two in particular becoming enraged.

The only exception are my Church friends, who might be miffed should they find out I'm an atheist, but I'm not that close to many of them. I feel like I should tell the one church friend I actually am close to though. Also, one of my other Church friends found my Twitter account by searching my name, and I sometimes argue with theists on that account, so he probably knows but doesn't want to call me on it.
I only know of ~3 people irl who play NS. I introduced 2 of my friends to this site as well but they stopped playing. The others are in different regions and don't frequent NSG so my views are pretty safe from rl.

The closest thing I've gotten to telling a friend of mine my views was when I corrected her when she called me a feminist. "I'm not a feminist, I'm an Islamist.", I'd say. I don't think she knows what Islamism is, so I didn't get a reaction from her, not even a "what's Islamism?". However, I think I'd be ok opening up her about my rl views considering we've been friends since middle school.
