Breastfeeding during a flight...

She continued: “She called me ‘disgusting’ followed by a litany of degrading swear words. Apparently she thought I was trying to steal her man by quietly breastfeeding my baby during the landing of the plane.

“Breastfeeding is natural, and our breasts were made for feeding our babies. Associating breastfeeding with sex or perversion is disturbing.”

It seems reasonable enough to consider the remarks uncalled for, though the airline is under no obligation to censor them. But what seems a little less reasonable is to have a problem with associating it with sex. Yes, breastfeeding is "natural." However, sex is also "natural." Including promiscuous sex. Why would anyone put it past evolution to have males respond to evidence of successful childbirth by wanting to give her another baby, and in turn, getting aroused? Can we really be sure that's any less "natural?" And if we can't, isn't it a little hypocritical to treat how "natural" one is relevant, and not the other?

And how often are women shamed for breastfeeding during a flight, compared to being shamed for bringing their infants on board the airplane at all? We all know that the one person who brings an infant, if the infant starts screaming, has made it a lot more stressful for hundreds of people, (if not also keeping them from the sleep they might've needed before landing) whereas if she'd just do a train or cruise, others could avoid the noise more easily...

Correct solution but for a different problem. That will work wonders for CO2 reduction.

The solution here is to desexualize beasts. This we do by making them a common occurrence in our daily lives rather than something taboo.

Advertising might be a good start.

Drop both mother and baby out of an emergency hatch.

I'm okay with seeing tits flying, not with them hanging out on a plane.

”Please place all hand luggage and children under the age of 6 in the overhead locker.”

In all seriousness, parents should make sure their kids are under control at all times, and if they wanna breastfeed, then do it in the bathroom, at this point in time.

Taking a dump is natural, though we'd be rather surprised if someone did it on an airplane seat. Blowing your nose? also natural and in many cultures OK to do in public provided you actually catch the snot... Eating is fine, and natural. Ditto drinking. If "breastfeeding is natural" was literally the only argument for allowing it in public places, it'd be a very silly argument indeed.

Drawing a false equivalence between one natural act and another is a bit pointless whatever the argument, and it's never really one I've seen people who argue that breastfeeding should be allowed in public make unless you strip what they are saying of all context. I think you might be fundamentally misunderstanding the whole "breastfeeding is natural" thing and oversimplifying it, removing it from context.

As far as I understand it, the argument is that breasts are primarily there to feed babies, what with us being mammals and all. The association of breasts as sexual objects is secondary, and largely cultural (i.e. not rooted in some form of biological need) With that in mind, the argument rather goes that a biological need to feed a baby trumps cultural sensitivity over catching a little bit more of a glimpse of someone's boob than you'd otherwise expect.

So yeah, I don't get the fuss over breastfeeding myself. I'm frankly astounded that anyone would have an issue around breastfeeding a baby on a plane of all places. Babies tend to get very angry and very loud if they're not fed; it's far better for everyone if they are.

I fly a lot, more than I’d like to.. and anyone who cares for their comfort over a baby that doesn’t have control over their emotions is a dick - parents fly for multiple reasons, seeing family or just a break.. for what is at most a 13 hour flight but more usually 2-3 hours, for which a baby is rarely an issue the whole flight, anyone with an attitude.. I’ve called them out on occasion.

It should be a non-issue. Also not every destination can be reached by train or ship, so that is an unrealistic expectation of families with babies. Babies cry, get the fuck over it.

Baby's have a tough time with the pressure changes from altitude changes. Sucking helps equalize the pressure in their ear canals and makes flight less painful to them, and hence others as they don't scream as much. If anything breast feeding on planes should be encouraged.

Babies shouldn't be allowed on flights. Also fat people should pay for two seats.

Society is broken.

I'm fine with it. I'll give opponents the benefit of the doubt, and say that it's not the most pleasant sight; however, here's my take on the subject. It's a completely natural process, and female breasts were made to feed their offspring. There are women who have periods unexpectedly. Is arresting them for indecency the right way to respond? I didn't think so! Besides, we breasts everywhere these days, so there should be no issue with breastfeeding.

Yes, the world is about you.. it’s a whole lot less misery than the baby, the parents and everyone who gets to to view your judgementalism have to suffer.

Bruh just ban biology that way mothers don’t have to breastfeed their kids.
Or something like that I won’t pretend to know what I’m talking about (unlike most NSers)
