Israeli Court orders NZ citizens:pay fine for music boycott

An Israeli court has ordered two New Zealand Students to pay damages of 45,000 Israeli new shekels (12,400 dollars) for causing mental harm to the ‘artistic welfare’ of three Israeli teenagers who had purchased tickets to a music concert.

The two New Zealanders (one a NZ Jew and the other NZ Palestinian) wrote a letter to New Zealand Singer Lorde asking her to cancel her planned performance in Tel Aviv . The case was brought by Israeli law group Shurat HaDin under a 2011 Israeli law that allows civil lawsuits against anyone who encourages a boycott of Israel.

New Zealand lawyers have already declared the decision a peice of "political theatre" This is not really a legal issue - this is about a court in Israel trying to create a precedent, and it will have quite a large global impact"

However the Shurat HaDin Lawyer has declared “This decision makes it clear that anyone who calls for a boycott against the state of Israel could find themselves liable for damages and need to pay compensation to those hurt by the boycott call, if they’re in Israel or outside it.."There are reciprocal treaties between Israel and various countries to enforce foreign judgments, and now after the verdict, we will go after their bank accounts until it is fully realized,"

Whether the Israeli decision is enforced in New Zealand is now a matter for the New Zealand courts to determine based on the circumstances of the case, it isnt automatic and there will certainly be a whole lot of reluctance against any push to have the decisions of foreign courts imposed on New zealand citizens in New Zealand. I'm pretty certain that would be disatrous not only for NZ but for the rest of the world.

On the plus side the whole thing is a bit farcical, and despite what your views are on Zionism and the effectiveness of the Boycott Israel movement, Israel isnt doing itself any favours by shoving its strong arm into the affairs of two poor students in New Zealand.
(NZ-Israel relations are rocky at best, there is trade and tourism occuring however Mossad agents have been caught stealing NZ Passpots for nefarious purposes, NZ supported UN Resolution 2334 and in 2017 Israel dowgraded its diplomatic relations with New Zealand to the level of chargés d'affaires)

But what of you of artistically inspired perveyors of NSG? Does the Israeli Law and the Israeli courts decision on Artisitc Welfare go waay to far? or should the New Zealand courts honour its relationship with Israel?

What would you do?

I don't think anyone should honor or take seriously Israel's law against boycotting Israel.

Wait, how did Israel even find out that the teenagers wrote to Lorde?

I think no one should take any branch of the Israeli government and their statements seriously. Maybe with the sole exception of the Knesset.

Are they going to fine me for boycotting Lorde? Just cuz she sucks?

Well, the Israeli government is feeling emboldened because it has wrecked Israeli democracy so much that Netanyahu is guaranteed another term, and it has a hands off approach from Washington to do literally anything it wants.

In the long term, this strategy is extremely harmful to Israel. But perhaps Likud believes the end is neigh?

This particular issue is pretty funny, actually, considering New Zealand isn't going to do anything about this at all, and might actually push this into a diplomatic crisis if Labour wants.

Fairly sure it was a matter of simply looking in New Zealand media and working from there.

Anyway, I'm not sure who I dislike more: Israel being petty or Lorde's fans.

Further proof Israel is the Sole Shining Democracy in the Middle East:

Israeli Court Rejects Appeal by Lara Alqasem, the U.S. Student Detained at Tel Aviv Airport

Being accused of supporting the BDS campaign is enough to get you banned from Israel just as if you were a veteran Hamas bomber. Banning someone for supporting a boycott sounds so SJW, considering the overall historical failure rate of boycotts.

Do you mean the Israeli fans who sought damages or Lorde's fans in general?

More importantly, will I be fined for boycotting Israel because they actually thought that Lorde needs to be boycotted? She's terrible. This boycott is actually more newsworthy than Lorde, and if that's not a sign that you suck at singing, I don't know what is!

I agree, it's a very tough question

I don't understand why they're doing this. They're pushing people away from their position.

The newer more poppy stuff in America is not great, but her early stuff we heard over here a lot I really liked.

But we can do that thing where we denigrate things because they're popular as a form of social catharsis too I suppose!

I’ll fess up
I thought she did a song I hate that she didn’t actually sing because I mistook the voice
Still I like Royals lyrically but not in the way it’s performed

It's a noble thing to do.

To clarify, since it seems so ridiculous, they’re trying to sue New Zealand citizens, who are in New Zealand, through an Israil court?

They should pay the fine and apologize. These boycotts are antisemitic attacks.
