Pentagon's weapons easily hacked

Postby An Alan Smithee Nation » Thu Oct 11, 2018 6:35 am

Pentagon fails to change default password

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-45823180

So it took hackers with basic tools just an hour to gain access to a weapons system. Many systems use open source software and the default passwords have been left in place. What is the point of billions of dollars on defence spending if you are making weapons that are so easily hacked?

Some of the most cutting-edge weapons in the US's military arsenal can be "easily hacked" using "basic tools", a government report has concluded.

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) found "mission-critical" cyber-vulnerabilities in nearly all weapons systems tested between 2012 and 2017.

That includes the newest F-35 jet as well as missile systems.

Pentagon officials had no immediate response to the 50-page report from the Senate Armed Services Committee.

The committee's members expressed concerns about how protected weapon systems were against cyber-attacks.

The report's main findings were:

the Pentagon did not change the default passwords on multiple weapons systems - and one changed password was guessed in nine seconds
a team appointed by the GAO was able to easily gain control of one weapons system and watch in real time as the operators responded to the hackers
it took another two-person team only one hour to gain initial access to a weapons system and one day to gain full control
many of the test teams were able to copy, change or delete system data with one team downloading 100 gigabytes of information
The GAO added that the Pentagon "does not know the full scale of its weapons system vulnerabilities".

Misleading. No hackers actually stole anything. It was the Pentagon running dry runs to see the effectiveness of the systems.

Yes but still that’s some basic security failures

Right, but from just reading the OP and not the actual link WITHIN the article that he linked (which was Vice ), it seems as if some foreign adversary actually did hack it. However, the OP should have stated that it was just a test run and nothing malicious happened. Disappointing OP.

I do agree the op is very misleading

You should really put a portion of the actual report in your OP, not just one link. And, you should put multiple sources that confirm this, not just one to Vice News.

I'm quite disappointed by your failure to read the article before replying.

What? I actually went into the Vice article that you linked and went inside of that one to the actual report, over which the Vice article is covering. Your accusations are baseless. Also, you're assuming that most people in NSG are rational and will actually do their research before replying - which, is not the case. Instead, just put a portion of the actual report inside the OP so that it's accessible and easy to read. Enough said.

So if you had actually read the article first why were you talking about nobody stealing anything, when that is not implied anywhere?

Welcome to the interconnected world. The best security is to keep these systems off the grid. That idea is as dead as the dinosaur. Get use to this sort of thing.

Even if strong passwords were always used. A dedicated state actor will crack these systems. It may take months not hours. But it will be done.

As I stated multiple times already, and had someone else agree with me, the opening post (OP) seems to insinuate that there was some malicious motives behind the 'hacking', when that wasn't the case. How hard is it to change the OP? Rather than debating what's actually in the report, which you should've directly linked to in the first place, you continue to debate me on whether or not you should simply put a snippet of the report in the OP.

the restructuring the of the 17 series just started so up this date the current problems do exist however Mark Esper does have a very good interest in cyber command. We will see if changes are going to be implemented. More likely instead of changing the structure, the current training is going to heavily focused.

Do you prefer your nukes with uranium or plutonium? Personally, I find that the plutonium gives it a very unique flavour.

Even if it is a dry run, at the very fucking least just change the password to something more secure when you get them.

Stuff like this, even if it was just a test, is one of the few reasons I'm actually glad most of our nuclear missiles are run off cold war-era technology.

Every new weapons system that uses some kind of IT technology in it should be put through its paces by an IT OPFOR team, to test it for vulnerabilities before it is accepted for service. How that isn't standard OP already I will never know, as it isn't as if the computer age has suddenly creeped up on the military...
