This is not a one time incident. The article I'm reading also states that nothing about it all was done, even after the girls complained to school officials.

I don't condone violence, but gods do I see why these girls did what they did to the boys. They are fed up.

The incident Sunday escalated due to one of the boys slapping one of the girls after they asked them to leave and began sexually harassing them. When the girls said something to the boys, one of the them slapped one of the younger girls for opposing them. Then the girls reacted. After that, the boys left and told people in the village. Three women came with some of the boys, and were the ones who started beating up the girls. Then more people came.

This is an ongoing issue. This is not the first time the girls in the school have had problems with boys and men in the village.

According to the reports in India Today, when the girls opposed the boys, one of the boys reached out and slapped one of the 12 year old girls. That's when the girls reacted in self-defense. The boys left and, I guess 1 or 2 hours later, they came back with adults. IT reports they came back at first with three women who started beating the girls. Then a mob from the town surrounded the school and after the principal asked for people to remain calm, the mob attacked the girls.
