Highschool band performs offensive halftime show

Postby Datlofff » Sun Oct 07, 2018 9:27 am

Hello NSG, been awhile sense I've been able to post due to grave family issues, but this came up in the news here in the great state of Mississippi so I thought I'd share it. Basically some JPS school (Jackson Public Schools) showed a halftime show where their high school band depicted a scene where police officers were held at gunpoint. This happens not less than a week after 2 officers in the town where this took place were shot and killed by criminals. People on both sides are being outraged at one another, even our governor voiced his opinion.

Full article: https://www.ajc.com/news/mississippi-hi ... BNjbUBhlL/

So my opinion on this is pretty simple, although this is outrageous, I have been in high school band here in Mississippi, and the way these things work is that your show for the entire football season is the same show. So there is no way anyone could say they made this show to upset Brookhaven (the town where this happened). This was clearly a political message done by a high school band director and his sub directors aimed at targeting and making villains out of police officers. I am appalled that we allow people with clear political bias in our public school systems. Politics have no place in schools where impressionable students go.

Anyways, whats your thoughts NSG :?:

Im a slightly Authoritarian Moderate, I believe limited monarchies are the best systems of government, and that every 2016 presidential candidate was an idiot.
I personally feel that most people, in the act of trying to sound smart, often usually don't know what the fuck they are talking about.

I mean like, aside from the whole ACAB thing, I don't think it's that big a deal? It's a high school marching band show. It's not like this is some big national event that'll have millions foaming at the mouth in misdirected rage.

Also, what do you mean that politics have no place in schools? You're in America. Education here has been - and probably will always be - politicized in one way or another. Educational policy is always formed by someone with a political bias.

It was neither going to be the end-of-the-world (after all, high school), nor was it some political jab.

It's just done in really poor taste with regards to the fallen officers.

It was apparently a reference to John Q. I don't remember that movie upsetting people when it came out?

That doesn't stop it being an example of "too soon". As those are frequently unintentional.

Not at all irrelevant. "Under God" was added as political move, as a way of spiting the CCCP's officially atheistic stance. It wasn't in the original pledge. The idea of the Pledge is also arguably political, as it is meant to instill patriotism in youth.

The pledge is just as political as the Communist Manifesto. I'd even go as far as saying it's even more political precisely because it doesn't get treated as such.

The pledge is little more than a daily loyalty oath. Indoctrination is bad, even if it's to Murica.

Do High Schools even have the Pledge? They didn't when I was in High School - that was purely a Grade School phenomenon.

In 2004, my high school band (not saying I was in the band at the time, this was before me) went to a band festival and performed a show where they played Time Warp, held up signs that said, "NOW PRESENTING JOHN EDWARDS," and then brought him out a clarinet player dressed as Dr. Frank-N-Furter. That was a straight jab at the Kerry/Edwards campaign? Honestly, who cares, it's just one of many shows like this and a high school in a red state that's not about to swing blue.
