Saudis murder Washington Post writer

Postby An Alan Smithee Nation » Sun Oct 07, 2018 3:03 am

Saudi Arabia has allegedly murdered a Washington Post writer when he visited the Saudi Consulate in Turkey to get papers relating to his divorce.

https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-saudi-politics-dissident-exclusive/exclusive-turkish-police-believe-saudi-journalist-khashoggi-was-killed-in-consulate-sources-idUKKCN1MG0ID

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-45775819

Fears are growing over missing Washington Post writer Jamal Khashoggi, after Turkish officials said they believe he has been murdered.
Mr Khashoggi, a Saudi national, went missing after visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Tuesday.
A Turkish official told the BBC that initial investigations indicated he was murdered there.
Saudi Arabia has denied the accusations, saying it is "working to search for him".
The Washington Post said it would be a "monstrous and unfathomable act" if he had been killed.
The BBC's Istanbul correspondent, Mark Lowen, said it would plunge Turkish-Saudi relations into an unprecedented crisis.
Turkish officials have opened an investigation and have been speaking to the media on condition of anonymity.
They have not given any evidence for their claim, nor suggested how he might have been killed.

The forces of tyranny are getting bolder, see also the disappearance of the head of Interpol in China. If Turkey's allegations do prove to be true, and the Saudi response does seem to suggest they have kidnapped him at the very least, then I ask once again if these are the sort of people Western democracies should be involved with. I think not.

But They're Our Allies!

Yep, if this had been Iran there'd be RAEG in right-wing media for days.
Crimes committed by Muslims will be proof of a pan-Islamic plot and Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand, crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of mentally ill lone wolves who do not represent their professed belief system at all.
The probability of someone secretly participating in homosexual acts is directly proportional to the frequency and loudness of their publicly professed disapproval and/or disgust for homosexuality.
If Donald Trump accuses an individual of malfeasance without evidence, it is almost a certainty either he or someone associated with him has in fact committed that very same malfeasance to a greater degree.

Well...

1) This latest news has only just come out, so there hasn't been much chance to react fully yet, and

2) There's already a building media frenzy across the political spectrum of UK and US media outlets:

I couldn't find a story on the Daily Mail's website, mind.

They're getting bolder because democracy is in retreat. They're getting bolder because -- and oh how they all quibble over minor details! -- they feel the United States and most of eastern and central Europe are now going to join them.

The power of contemporary authoritarianism is not so much to punish the innocent -- though there certainly is that -- as it is to protect the guilty. And they'll protect each other once it comes -- till it's convenient to ditch solidarity in favor of a fresh new illiberal undemocratic brutality.
Authoritarianism kills all. Never forget that.

Given that the Saudis are committing genocide in Yemen and are willing to bomb school buses and deliberately inflict famine and pestilence on the entire populace, it's not hard to believe they'd kill a journalist too.

They get imprisoned and killed if possible as they do not allow any sort of independent media within the country to operate.

They did say that divorce can be deadly...

The husband's obligation is then to provide financial support for the divorced wife for a period of four months and ten days. A woman can only obtain a divorce with the consent of her husband or judicially if her husband has harmed her. In practice, it is very difficult for a Saudi woman to obtain a judicial divorce.

Maybe they're just going for gender equality? First they're letting women drive, now they're not letting men divorce, what's next?

I believe the Saudis let them (don't have the sauce on me but I'll look around for it), but really all the Saudis have to do is mop up the blood before the Turks arrive, fold him up into a diplomatic bag like Philip does to that girl in that scene in the Americans, and smile and say "gosh we thought he went home with YOU!" :p

First we kidnap the head of Interpol, so the organization will disband. Then we kidnap a writer of the Washington Post to make his company fall.

Now we go after the Canadian government.
So you decide to open it anyway? What the heck, man?

This is not surprising. The Saudis are known for their shady activities, from nightclub activities in London to international bribes. Now, some Saudi agents are going to show up at my door for writing this.

Oh hey, using a story on Saudi skullduggery to take a completely unrelated shot at women.

To what end?

I mean, Khashoggi is (hopefully not "was") rather critical of the Saudi regime, and Turkish-Saudi relations aren't the best. Not terrible, not excellent, but somewhere in between. What on Earth would Turkey have to gain from removing a Washington Post columnist which was critical of MBS and the system in Saudi Arabia? The good graces of Saudi Arabia, for removing a critical voice?

I like bashing on my country as much as this entire forum does, but come on. Turkey has nothing to gain by abducting or killing Khashoggi.
